Laurene Schermerhorn Obituary

Fort Ann Laurene R. Schermerhorn passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2008, at the Glens Falls Hospital after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. She was surrounded by her family and died peacefully at age 62. She was able to stay at her home, which she loved so much, until a few hours before her death. Laurene spent her entire life making others happy and brought a smile to anyone she met. Her greatest interest was raising her children. She brought much love and happiness to her family, especially to her three grandchildren. She was an extemely talented individual who made beautiful crafts and was an excellent photographer. She loved reading and was known for her great Italian cooking. She enjoyed traveling and especially loved spending time at Hampton Beach, N.H. She was very content and at peace near the ocean, which she loved so much. In 1984, she married Dave Schermerhorn of Lake George and they enjoyed 24 wonderful years of marriage, celebrating their anniversary on May 19 only a week before her death. Laurene had two children at the time of their marriage. Her son, Rob, was killed in an accident, and this was a terrible loss to her and Dave. Together, they raised their son, Joshua, 19, and their daughter, Lisa, 34. Joshua will be a junior at SUNY Plattsburg in the fall. Lisa is a technology manager at Bank of America and lives with her husband, Troy Woodbury and their three children in Virginia Beach, Va. Survivors include: her husband, Dave Schermerhorn, her daughter, Lisa Woodbury, along with her husband, Troy, and their three children, Ciyera, Gabrielle and Trinity, all of Virginia Beach, Va.; her son, Joshua Schermerhorn of Fort Ann; her sister, Kathleen Bluestein and her husband, Richard of Malta, N.Y.; her father, Kenneth Cone of Fort Ann; her father-in-law, Warren Schermerhorn and his wife, Kathleen of Lake George. She was predeceased by her son, Robbie, and her mother, Beatrice Cone. Dave and Laurene would like to thank all of the caregivers of the Glens Falls Hospital for their kindness. Laurene's care there was compassionate and professional for the entire length of her illness. Laurene's funeral service was held at the convenience of the family, and there were no public calling hours. Friends may donate on Laurene's behalf to the CR Wood Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital, 102 Park Street, Glens Falls, NY 12801. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mason Funeral Home, 18 George St., Fort Ann.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
