Nora Elizabeth Morris

Nora Morris Obituary

South Glens Falls, N.Y. Nora Elizabeth Morris entered into the Grace of God on June 19, 2008, at her home with her loving family by her side, after a short illness. She was 75 years old. She was born on Nov. 29, 1932 in Glens Falls, N.Y., to Dennis and Mabel Sullivan and grew up on Hunter Street across from the Sagamore playground with her 11 brothers and sisters. Nora graduated with a Regents' diploma from St. Mary's Academy in Glens Falls in 1950. She thoroughly enjoyed her St. Mary's education and remained close friends with former schoolmates, with many friendships rekindled around their 50th class reunion. After her graduation from St. Mary's, Nora attended secretarial school in Boston, Mass., and then worked for General Electric in Hudson Falls as a secretary in the quality assurance department. It was at GE that she met the love of her life and her future husband, Neil. Before they were married in 1958, they bought their first house on Jackson Avenue in South Glens Falls. After her first child was born in 1960, Neil insisted that she "retire" and raise the children full time and she was delighted to do so. The young family moved to the Town of Moreau in 1968 to build the house Nora and Neil would reside in for the rest of their lives. Nora was a natural mother, instilling in each of her children a love of books from endless hours of reading to them. She took her children on many educational trips to places like Washington, D.C., and Boston, Mass. and delighted in reading every single word of every single historical plaque to them no matter how bored they appeared. Her focus on education was fruitful, because two of her three children became elementary school teachers and all three children pursued and received graduate degrees. While bringing up the children, Nora was active for a number of charitable purposes. She delivered Meals on Wheels for many years, drove patients to and from cancer treatments for the American Cancer Society, to name just two. When the children were grown, Nora and Neil opened an antique shop called Country Collectibles on Saratoga Avenue in South Glens Falls. Nora ran the business and specialized in antique Christmas ornaments, linens and other "smalls," while Neil filled the shelves with antique clocks, which he repaired and restored. Nora made many friends in the local antiques community over the years, and maintained those friendships long after she and Neil sold the business in the early 1990s. Nora had the unique and sometimes humorous gift of seeing value in every object, no matter how tattered or worn it was. After Neil's death in 1995, Nora became very active in local bridge circles. She enjoyed the game, the friendships and the camaraderie of bridge very much - even engaging in some tournament play in the Northeast. Nora also traveled extensively, taking trips to Italy, Costa Rica, Grand Cayman Island, and many destinations within the U.S. for sightseeing, recreation, and to visit family. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Michael the Archangel Church in South Glens Falls. Nora was predeceased by her beloved husband, Neil, in 1995; her sisters, Marion and Kathleen; and her brothers, Roger, William, Frank and James. She is survived by her children, Cynthia M. Suprenant and her husband, Mike, of Queensbury; Suzanne G. Schiavoni and her husband, John, of South Glens Falls; and her son, William and his wife, Lisa, also of South Glens Falls. She is also survived by her precious 9- month-old granddaughter, Katherine Marie Morris, the daughter of Bill and Lisa. In addition, she is survived by four sisters:Mabel Ryan of White Horse Beach, Mass., Barbara and her husband, Dan, of Woodbridge, Va., Audrey and her husband, Bruce, of Contoocook, N.H.; one brother, Edmund, and his wife, Beverly, of Glens Falls; and one brother-in-law, Anthony Delcoco, husband of her late sister, Kathleen. Nora is also survived by two special nieces, Patricia Mustacaros and her husband, James, of Plympton, Mass., and Barbara Defazzio and her husband, Vincent, of Debary, Fla.; and one special nephew, Richard Sullivan, and his wife, Carolyn, of Goodlettsville, Tenn. She is also survived by her good friend and Saturday morning grocery shopping partner, Jeanne Doin and her husband, Robert, of South Glens Falls, and by her good friend and across-the-street neighbor, Sally Vishneowski. Nora had many other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors that were special to her during her life, and which are, unfortunately, too numerous to mention here. She knew that God had blessed her, and passed on her blessings by caring for ailing family members like her grandmother, mother and brothers during their times of need. Friends and family may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2008, at Regan & Denny Funeral Home, 94 Saratoga Ave., South Glens Falls, N.Y. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 23 at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 80 Saratoga Ave., South Glens Falls, N.Y., with the Rev. Robert A. Nugent officiating. Burial will follow immediately after the Funeral Mass at St. Mary's Cemetery, 225 Main St., South Glens Falls, N.Y. The family would like to thank William Tedesco, M.D. and his nurse, Joyce Flower, the Radiation Oncology Department at the C.R. Wood Cancer Center, the Community Hospice of Saratoga and Interim Healthcare for their assistance in its time of need. The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866, or to the charity of one's choice.

To all of Nora's family. I was so saddened to read of Nora's passing. We have been friends for 50 years. I met Nora at the GE in 1956, and we became pals. She was a real fun girl. Always a smile and quick laugh. Later, we became reacquainted at the bridge table. Nora was a sharp bridge player, while still having a good time. We had lots of laughs. She was also one of my e-mail buddies. Nora, I'll miss you.

PS: The obituary was a fine tribute to her, and very well written. It captured her spirit.

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warmly on your face and the rains fall gently on your fields,
And until we meet again, May the Good Lord hold you in the palm of His hand..
