Hey Palmateer,
Every time I think of you I remember sitting in the chow hall of my FOB having breakfast with you and laughing as if nothing in the world could touch us. I remember being so excited that your convoy had stopped in, I hadn't seen you in the longest time... it brings tears to my eyes to think that was the last time I'd ever see you, the last time we'd share a laugh. You're an inspiration to me still and I'll never forget you bro, keep fighting the good fight wherever you are.

Although I never knew your husband we share a terrible bond because I lost my husband on the same day as you lost your beloved Mark. Matt spoke well of his fellow soldiers and mentioned SPC Palmateer as a trusted comrade and a knowledgeable man. I miss my Matthew everyday as Im sure you miss Mark, but Im comforted in the thought that the 3 men that lost their lives on that terrible June day are now serving in heaven.

We were such a tight group that it left a large hole in the heart of our unit when they were called from us. I hope that time will ease some of the pain from your loss. Palmateer was a great soldier and man for three reasons. 1, you could always count on him for a can of dip if you ran out. 2, he had a big heart and cared a lot about his fellow soldiers and brothers in arms. 3, He Served his Country fearlessly without any complaints. No medal or tin badge will ever makeup for the loss of Palmateer. im Proud to have served with Palmateer. Id also like to thank his Family for raising such a patriot as Palmateer and sharing him with us.

To the Palmateer Family. I want to thank you all for sharing Mark with us. I met him through the Meybohms and I thank God I did. He brought so much joy to my son when he was around him. He would hang out with the fans at the boys' baseball games and keep us all laughing. He was a wonderful person that I will always remember. Mark, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation, a nation in mourning for our fallen hero’s. You like so many other soldiers chose to serve our nation when needed most and with your life you protected the very core of what America stands for. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also made that sacrafice on 5/6/2008 when he was killed in action in Iraq. It was with a very heavy heart that I heard about the death of SPC Palmateer. I knew Mark and am in his unit from Camp Smith. He is a true hero and will be missed by all of us. Dear Mr. and Mrs. Palmateer and family,
We are deeply saddened to hear the news about your son Mark. Our hearts ache with you and our love goes out to you. We extend our deepest sympathy. Your son is a true hero and a wonderful and courageous person. He has fought to give us the freedom and deep honor that makes this country proud. His sacrifice was not in vain. Mark’s characteristics and beliefs are the fine qualities that made him the strong man he became.
It is the most unreal moment of our lives when we hear the news of the death of a son. Life will never be the same and we are sorry you have to feel this deep pain and unbearable loss. Our prayers are with you and our thoughts will be upholding you daily.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Spc Mark Palmateer our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Mark. And to Mark it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Army and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Mark, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure.
