Mary Malone Obituary

Chestertown and Friends Lake Mary Bernice Malone, 80, died unexpectedly Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Glens Falls Hospital. Born July 1, 1928 in Chestertown, she was the daughter of the late Bernard F. and Teresa (Murphy) Malone. Bernice received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Manhattanville College. She was an editor for McGraw Hill Publishing in New York City. The Malone family owned the Hotel Atateka on Friends Lake; Bernice and her sister, Teresa, were the last family members to operate the hotel. Bernice was on the founding committee for The Friends of the Library for the town of Chester, and also active in the Yeats Festival. Bernice was a parishioner at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Chestertown. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by one sister, Elizabeth Malone. Survivors include her sister, Teresa Malone of Friends Lake, Chestertown; one cousin, Joy Fitzgerald of Florham Park, N.J., and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today, July 26, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Chestertown, with the Rev. John O'Kane, pastor, officiating. Relatives and friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. today at the church prior to the Mass. Interment will be at St. Cecilia's cemetery, Warrensburg. Memorials in Bernice's name may be sent to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, P.O. Box 471, Chestertown, NY 12817. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Barton-McDermott Funeral Home, Inc., 9 Pine St., Chestertown.
