Phyllis Whitney Obituary

GRANVILLE Phyllis Whitney passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at her home. Phyllis was born on March 26, 1937, in Wallingford, Vt., the daughter of Kenneth W. and Irene S. (Rabtoy) Devino. Phyllis was employed at Telescope Folding Furniture for 30 years. In addition to this, she worked with her husband on their family farm. In the late 1980s, she and her husband, John, worked together to develop their farm land into "Whitney Estates" housing development. Phyllis was an avid pool player. She played in both the Granville Pool League and the Tri-County Pool League representing the Milk Can Bar. In an effort to hone her skills, Phyllis had her own pool table so she could stay on top of her game. The only thing Phyllis didn't like about pool was losing. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. Phyllis was predeceased on Nov. 16, 1999, by her husband, Leonard "John" Whitney, a son, Leonard Whitney III, and a sister, Barbara Fiske. She is survived by her three sons: Kenneth Whitney and his wife, Charlene, Ricky Whitney, both of Granville, and Robert Whitney and his companion, Vicki Reynolds, of Hartford; a daughter, Sandra Whitney and her companion, Ed Grainger, of Truthville; two brothers: Marvin Devino of Granville and Pete Devino of West Glens Falls; two sisters: Nancy Armstrong and her husband, Richard, of Hartford, and Mary Boucher and her husband, Bill, of Florida; two grandchildren: Jeffrey Whitney of Kansas and Jodie Whitney of Granville and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at 10 a.m. at the Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville. Burial will follow at Morningside Cemetery in Hartford. Friends may call on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Granville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 153, Granville, NY 12832.

Phyllis was a wonderful woman and she will be missed. From the days of my kids going up to "trick or treat" to the great success of "Whitney Estates" that John & Phyllis developed we really enjoyed getting to know your mother (and your father of course). We are very sorry for your loss. We were very sorry not to be able to attend calling hours. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Your parents left a wonderful legacy in the Town of Granville. Whitney Estates is a wonderful place for people to live and families to grow.
With Sympathy, Rebecca, Stewart, Heather, Joshua & Brittany
