Alice Maude Blackwood

Castleton, Vt. Mrs. Alice Maude Blackwood, 98, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2007, at Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland, Vt. Mrs. Blackwood was born Oct. 21, 1909. in Hampton, N.Y., the daughter of Ernest W. and Mary (Scott) Dayton. Alice , together with her family, owned and operated a family dairy farm in the Castleton, Vt. area for many years. Later in her life, she was employed at the Summit Lodge in Killington, Vt., where she worked for several years until her retirement during the 1970s. While living in Castleton, Alice also volunteered as a 4H leader with the local youth of the area. Alice is survived by her daughter, Glenda Coursey of Marion, N.C.; her four sons, William Blackwood and his wife, Janice, of Castleton,Vt., Marvin Blackwood of Fair Haven,Vt., Charles Blackwood and his wife, Alice, of Whitehall, N.Y., and Milton Blackwood and his wife, Carol, of Charlottesville, Va. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter James Blackwood Sr., who died in August of 1965; her infant son, Walter James "Sonny" Blackwood Jr.; and by three sisters, Helen Dewey, Hattie Winchell and Lola Waterhouse. A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, Oct. 29, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home, 119 No. Main Street, Fair Haven, Vt., with the Rev. Ashley Meade officiating. Visiting hours for family and friends will be on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007, at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. and also on Monday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Blackwood may be given to a charity of one's choice.
