Saverio Scammacca Obituary
GLENS FALLS Saverio "Richard" Scammacca, 83, formerly of Linden Street, South Glens Falls died suddenly Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007, at Samuel Stratton Veterans Administration Hospital.
Born and educated in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Michael and Lee Catalano Scammacca.
He was a graduate of Brooklyn Law School. An attorney, he practiced Law in Brooklyn for 35 years. He retired in 1995, and moved to Clifton Park at that time, and then to the Glens Falls address. Most recently, he has been a patient at Beacon Point in Clifton Park.
Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II as a pilot in the Pacific Theatre, receiving the Air Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the "Purple Heart." He flew the India, Burma, China route over the Himalayas and was a long-standing member of the Hump Pilot's Association.
With his late wife Mary, Richard formerly owned and operated the Northwood-Ho Resort in Lake George. Following his retirement he and Mary traveled to Europe and toured the Continent extensively by car.
While a resident of the Long Island area, Richard was Chairman of the Freeport Civic Association. He was a baseball enthusiast and was past President of the Rosedale Baseball Association.
He was an author and publisher and supporter of the arts. He co-authored a book on gourmet cooking. He was a musician and singer and had sung at the World's Fair. He was known as a horticultural specialist, was an avid bridge player and won several local championships. An historian, he created a personal library.
Mr. Scammacca was the husband of the late Mary Martino Scammacca. He was father of Patricia Abamowitz (Leonard) of Naples, Fla. and Michael Scammacca (Jean) of Waterford, grandfather of Aaron and David Abramowitz and Gabriela and Nicholas Scammacca.
He was predeceased by his twin brother, Ignazio "Nat" Scammacca. Also surviving is his devoted companion, Marion Calandra of South Glens Falls, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Route 32), Waterford.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. prior to the funeral.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Association in care of the funeral home office.
