Dorothy Y. McDowell

GLENS FALLS Dorothy Y. McDowell, 96, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 20, 2007, at Pleasant Valley Nursing Home, Argyle. Dorothy was a former resident of West Notre Dame Street, Glens Falls, followed by the Glens Falls Home then, upon its closure, the Glen at Highland Meadows. Born Jan. 25, 1911, in Milton, Pa., Dorothy was a daughter of the late Harrison and Bessie (Keefer) Yocum. She was a registered nurse, a graduate of Westchester School of Nursing (Grasslands) where she met her husband, Joseph Lincoln McDowell, D.M.D. They were married Oct. 7, 1934. Following Maj. Dr. McDowell's WWII service, the family moved to Glens Falls where Dr. McDowell set up his practice of orthodontics and Dorothy concentrated on raising their young children. Later, she would return to her profession part time in OB-GYN services at the Glens Falls Hospital. Dorothy was a member of St. Mary's Parish, Glens Falls, where she once served as a Eucharistic minister. Her survivors include a daughter, Linda Porcelli and husband, Gary; Michael McDowell and wife, Linda, and their son, Brian; and her daughter-in-law, Joanne. Also a sister, Berneice Woodling of Mifflinburg, Pa., and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Joseph, a son, John, a sister, Hilda Dwyer and brother, Adam Martin Yocum. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's, Warren Street, Glens Falls, on Monday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, South Glens Falls. Calling hours will be held today, Nov. 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Singleton-Healy Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury. The family suggests memorial donations be made to Caritas Respite Care Program, 142 Bay St., Glens Falls, NY 12801 or the Glens Falls Senior Citizens Center, 380 Glen St., Glens Falls, NY 12801.
