Lucy Bemis Obituary

Gansevoort Lucy F. Bemis, 77, passed away peacefully at home with her family at her side on Friday, Nov. 16, 2007. Born on Dec. 6, 1929, in Tokyo, Japan, she was the daughter of Yazaburo Masumura and Nari Takano Masumura. Lucy came to the United States in November 1952, following her marriage to Donald. She was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Lucy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She appreciated classical music, folk music, the arts and played piano as well. Lucy also enjoyed the outdoors, nature, camping, gardening and traveling. She was a member of the Church of the Messiah in Glens Falls and a past member of the Altar Guild. Lucy was also an associate of the Society of St. Margaret. At one time, she and her husband ran The Place Coffee House and made many friends in the folk scene in the United States, England and Scotland. Besides her parents, her brother, Kinya Masumura, and her sister, Reiko Dohi, predeceased her. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Donald Bemis, whom she married on Jan. 20, 1952, in Tokyo, Japan; three children: Virginia B. Carney and her husband, Douglas of Yarmouth, Maine, Arthur Bemis of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Nari Bemis-Rothleder and her husband, Norman, of Huntington, N.Y.; six grandchildren: Jill and Ryan Carney, Matthew and Christopher Bemis and Jonah and Justin Rothleder; two great grandchildren; her sister, Wakako Masumura of Tokyo, Japan and several nieces and nephews in both the United States and Japan. A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at the Church of the Messiah, Glen Street, Glens Falls. Burial will be at noon at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.
