Weiss Sigmund Obituary

HUDSON FALLS Sigmund Weiss, MD, Ph.D., 97, of Elm Street, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at The Stanton Nursing Centre following a long illness. He was born Dec. 25, 1909, in New York City, and was the oldest child of the late Samuel and Pauline (Weinberger) Weiss. He lived in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Denver, Colo., and Washington, D.C. For the last 67 years, he lived in Hudson Falls. Dr. Weiss graduated from Boys High School in Brooklyn at the age of 15 in 1924, City College of New York at the age of 19 in 1929, New York University with an M.A. in anatomy in 1930, and from the University of Colorado Medical School in 1937. He earned both an M.D. degree and a Ph.D. degree on the same day and was the first person in the United States to have attained that honor. Dr. Weiss opened a general family practice on Elm Street, Hudson Falls, in December, 1940, and he continually practiced until 2001. He began his long affiliation with the Glens Falls Hospital when it contained only 45 beds, and he was proud to have seen it grow into such a major medical center. He was the medical director of the Hallmark Nursing Home (now The Stanton Nursing Centre) for almost 20 years. His civic activities included membership on the Board of Directors of Empire Blue Shield Northeast for many years. He also served as a former president of the Washington County Medical Association, held membership in congregation Shaaray Tefila in Glens Falls and served as a medical advisor in Hudson Falls during World War II. He loved going to his "camp" on Assembly Point on Lake George and working on the property. Cutting down trees, digging up stumps and piling up rocks were his favorite activities. He often stated that all the hard work he did was the reason for his longevity. Dr. Weiss was the beloved husband of the late Martha (Rodman) Weiss, and the brother of the late Dr. Mortimer Weiss and the late Marvin Weiss. Survivors include his daughter, Jane W. Mann (Bernard); and three grandchildren: Nancy M. Yumkas (Mark), Michael S. Mann (Edana) and Diane S. Mann. He also had five great-grandchildren: Jacob, 12, Molly, 8, Katelyn, 6, Spencer, 4, and Gregory, 2. The family gratefully acknowledges the care given for many years by Joan Graham. There will be no local funeral services for Dr. Weiss. There will be a graveside service at Mount Ararat Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island, N.Y. where he will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife. Shiva will be observed at 14 Hughes St., Rockville Centre, NY 11750, at the home of Jane and Bernard Mann. The family suggests memorials be made as donations to the Stanton Nursing Centre, 152 Sherman Ave., Glens Falls, NY 12801. Dear Jane,

What a life he had! And he was such a lucky man to have had your mother for his wife... and the nice part is that he knew it. I was always made to feel so welcome at your home on Elm St. and at the "camp".

I'm sure you have many many heartwarming stories to tell of your dad and I know he'll be missed by many. Remember the time we were eating raw rhubarb and were told that it was poisonous?

I'm glad I knew him.
