Robert Tuma Obituary

NORTH CREEK Robert J. "Gramps" Tuma, 72, of state Route 28, passed away, Thursday morning, Dec. 6, 2007, at the Glens Falls Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer, with his loving family at his side. Born June 14, 1935, in Bay Shore, he was the son of Jean Tuma of Pinellas Park, Fla. and the late Joseph Tuma. Bob was a U.S. Navy veteran and served with a construction battalion in the Philippines. He married Mary VanVorst on July 31, 1960, in Babylon. Bob was a career truck driver with the Teamster Union in the metropolitan area for more than 20 years. Following his retirement, he and his family settled in the North Country. Spending time with his family and his son's dog, Rip, following NASCAR racing and tending to his garden were but a few of his favorite pastimes. While residing on Long Island, he was a member of the Rod and Gun Club and enjoyed playing on the local softball league. Besides his father, his daughter, Kimberly VanScoy, predeceased him. In addition to his mother, Jean, Bob leaves behind, his beloved wife of 47 years, Mary L. Tuma of North Creek; his two sons, Robert J. Tuma and his wife, Patricia, of North Creek and Kevin J. Tuma and his companion, Kimberly Springer, of North Creek; three grandsons: Bobby Tuma and Max and Lucas VanScoy; and his sister, Janet Larson and her husband, Edward, of Jefferson and their son, Edward, of Florida. A memorial service to celebrate Bob's life will be conducted on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Alexander Funeral Home, Inc., 4479 state Route 28, North River. Friends may call on his family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may take the form of donations to the Johnsburg EMS, North Creek, NY 12853. Bob's family would encourage those visiting the Glens Falls Hospital to take the time and bring a care package of doughnuts to the outstanding Tower 2 staff.
