Albert Hommel Obituary

CAMBRIDGE Albert Harry Hommel, 83, of Turnpike Road, died peacefully at home on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, after a long illness. Born June 29, 1924, in West New York, New Jersey, he was the son of Albert and Gertrude (Reikorsky) Hommel. At the age of 17, Harry enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country for the next five years. He later completed his high school education. On Nov. 30, 1952, he married Dorothy (Olson) Hommel. The family lived in Hackensack, N.J., Arlington Heights, Ill., and then moved to Cambridge in 1965. Harry worked as a salesman for Afsco Fence in Latham until his retirement. Harry liked to travel, especially to Las Vegas. He enjoyed playing cards. Survivors include five children and their spouses: Cindy and Mark Dravenstott of Smithville, Ohio, John and June Hommel, with whom Harry lived the past 11 years, Jeff and Lisa Hommel of Cambridge, Caryn Zeh of Glenmont and Christi and Matt Burdick of Hoosic; a brother and sister-in-law, Buddy and Helen Hommel of Denver, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and his former wife, Dottie Hommel of Cambridge. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007, at 10 a.m. at Gerald B. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 52, Cambridge, NY 12816. Arrangements are under the direction of Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, Cambridge.
