Sylvia Josephine Bender

SHUSHAN (Solveig) Sylvia Josephine Bender, 97, formerly of Butcher Lane, died peacefully Monday, Dec. 10, 2007, at the Orchard Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Granville, where she had been a resident since 2006. Sylvia was the widow of Harry A. Lincoln, Emery Butcher and William Bender. Born Oct. 27, 1910, in Jersey City, N.J., she was the daughter of Norwegian immigrants, Olaf and Anna (Kittlesen) Jorgensen. The family bought a farm and moved to Sandgate, Vt., in the 1920s. Sylvia and Harry Lincoln were married in 1925. In the early 1950s, Sylvia moved to Shushan and remained there until her move to the Orchard. She was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Fort Miller. Every one of her grandchildren had an afghan crocheted by "Nana." She also enjoyed sewing and made several quilts. A son, Stanley Lincoln, and four siblings: John and Walter Jorgensen, Gertrude Durstewitz and Dorthea Oathout, died before her. Survivors include two children and their spouses, Doug and Janice Lincoln and Betty (Lincoln) and Louis Andrews, all of Shushan; 16 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, numerous great-great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends and relatives are invited to call today, Wednesday, Dec. 12, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main St., Cambridge. A funeral service conducted by the Rev. Robert Tice will be held at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Salem. Sylvia asked for donations in her memory be made to the Shushan Fire Department, Shushan, NY 12873 or the Salem Rescue Squad, East Broadway, Salem, NY 12865.
