I just received the news of Bill's passing. I find it hard to believe that the "Billie" I knew in high school has left this earth at such a young age. As a clasmate, Bill was larger than life. He and his brother, Al were MHS super-heroes! I offer all of the Schmidt family my deepest sympathies. May God give you peace through this difficult time.

Dear Schmidt Family,

I am a West Point classmate and fellow hoosier. I am proud to have known this very great American. From Day #1, he accomplished so many things that most of us can only dream of--a wonderful family, larger-than-life professional achievements, engagement in grassroots community affairs of real importance to all Americans. Please accept our deepest sympathy.

Dear Susan, Pat, Bill and Paul:

Coach Mike Casey called me today about Bills passing. We are deeply saddened and send our deepest sympathy. My wife Susan overheard the phone call and stated what a great job you and Bill have done raising the boys to be respectfull and honorable people. When they had stopped by the house after Pauls graduation, she felt the bond that they are special students, athletes and friends of mine.
God bless you all.
Those who have lived great and generous lives, live on forever.

Yours Sincerely,
Doug, Sue, Justin, Dylan & Ian Norris
and the Crown Point HS Swim Team Family

Dear Susan and Family
Alvin called me today about Bills passing. I'm both shocked and deeply saddened at his loss. I first met Bill before he started school about 4yrs old back in Tolleston at the house on Taney St. Bill had the deepest Mr. Froggy type voice for a 4 yr old kid that you have ever heard. He and Alvin were the Taney Street Tigers. We used to watch noontime television together--Uncle Johnny Coons. Later we played football together at Merrillville and more than once Bill had to save my bacon from his left end position. This past summer I had the chance to visit with Alvin and Cheryl & Gerry out here in California. It was a good chance to revisit and catch up on memories of the entire family and especially Bills mom Bonnie and father Al Sr. I only have the fondest of memories of your husband and father. May he now be at rest. I'll sure miss him as I know you will as well.

Bill and I were good friends at West Point and both of us stayed in the Army reserves to retire.
When our work is done
Our course on earth is run
May it be said well done
Be thou at peace
God speed Bill

I will visit you at West Point Next April at our 40th reunion! The burial at West Point will make your family proud of your service to America.

Dear Schmidt Family:

I regret to learn of Bll's passing, he and Al were my childhood sports heroes. I recall every M'ville/Crown Point basketball game was quite an event. I have only fond memories of Bill and his classmates, including his running mate Pat O'Brien. The Merrillville Nation has always stuck together, even after all these years, and I offer our prayers for the family on their behalf. God Bless.......Frank Meltzer

Dear Susie and the Schmidt Family, I worked with Bill at McAuto. He was my first boss at the beginning of my career. He taught me everything about being successful in computer business sales. I saw him at one of our reunions a few years ago in Chicago and he said his greatest achievement was his family. He was so proud of his children and wife. I cannot imagine how difficult this must be for you to lose such a great person. Bill was one of the funniest people I have ever known. I miss that laugh of his. God bless you all. Tina

I was shocked to hear from Rick Joliff about Bill's passing! Even though I graduated in 1968, I knew him from M'ville High School playing sports. May the Schmidt family please accept my thoughts and prays at this sad time. God Bless You All!
