Julia Glassey Obituary

GLASSEY, JULIA A., "BERT", 90 - of Pleasantville, a veteran of the local restaurant industry for over 60 years, passed away on July 13th, surrounded by her family at her home. Originally from Galloway, Bert had been a cook, waitress and was famously known as the "soup lady" for the soups she made for many dining establishments in the Greater Atlantic City region. She was also known for her charitable work with the March of Dimes, the Donny Fund and the Field of Dreams. She learned her culinary skills while being raised in the New Jersey State Police Barracks in Absecon which was operated by her mother, Julia Flynn. The wife of over 40 years of the late Stan Glassey, Bert was a fixture at PHS football and the semi-pro Jokers' games where her husband was the announcer, as well as at the stock car races at the AC Speedway. She is survived by her daughter, Claire Hunt, two sons Jake (Maureen) and John (Kim), grandchildren Dawn and Kelly Hunt, Jake Jr. (Kristin), Jason (Mary Jane), Karen Cunningham, Alyssa, Artie and Adam Elwell, and great-grandchildren Jackson, Quinn and Kaitlyn. "BB's" work history included the AC Tuna Club, the Flying Dutchman, Oyster Creek Inn, Quinn's Inn, Huber's, the Captain's Galley, the Lighthouse, McNesby's, McGettigan's and the Park Restaurant. She was one of the founders of the Yacht Club of Pleasantville, and spent many years crabbing and fishing on Lakes Bay on their houseboat the "Slo-Mo". A remembrance reception will be held at the Yacht Club of Pleasantville on Monday July 21st, from 11 AM to 2 PM. Casual attire is encouraged. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Donny Fund for critically ill children, 1000 Bay Dr., Pleasantville, 08232. Services will be private, and handled through Adams-Perfect.

Dear Karen, Jake, John, Claire, and all family members,
When I think of "Grandmom Glassey", it is always with a smile. I remember going on the "hunt for Babe" and how excited Grandmom was at finding him, sitting in the back seat on the way home, this little puppy with the big round belly between us--a grand smile on Grandmom's face. Another thought: she always made sure to send soup into work for my lunches--and I always loved it. She definitely made the world a better place.
