Charles Vassar Obituary



VASSAR, CHARLES W. SR. US Army (ret), 68, went home to be with the Lord on June 13, 2008. Born and raised in West Cape May, he was the son of the late Mayor John 'Jack' Vasser and Flora Mae Vasser. Charles was a resident of Newport News, Va., for 25 years. Mr. Vassar enlisted in the US Army at age 20, and served his country honorably for 24 years, advancing to the rank of Sergeant Major. During his career he had received numerous awards and medals. Charles earned a Bachelor Degree in Theology and started the People's Outreach Ministry. He would walk the community spreading the Lord's word and helping with food, clothing and shelter for those in need. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother James, and his sister, Jean Vasser. Mr. Vassar is survived by: his wife and best friend of 43 years, Anita A.; daughters, Edna Vassar Stringfield and Charmaine Vassar Bell (Michael); sons, George Jarmon (Petra), Charles Vassar Jr. (Ginger), Dwayne Vassar (Jean), Reuben Vassar (Carmen), Jakuta Williams (Joy), and Joey Beckman (Andrea). Also surviving are a sister and 5 brothers; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were recently in Newport News, Va. Burial was in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Suffolk, Va.
