Greta Meinstein Seelig

Greta Seelig Obituary

SEELIG, GRETA MEINSTEIN, (GEEMOM), 85 - of McKee City, a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother of exceptional strength and character died on July 30, 2008 at her residence, after battling cancer for a number of years. She was born in Zindorf, Germany, a part of Bavaria. She excelled in athletics as a child and became a champion hurdler who was prevented by Hitler from entering the 1936 Olympics because she was Jewish. Her family left Germany and she moved to New York State where she met the love of her life, Eric Seelig. Eric was the German Middleweight and Light-Heavyweight boxing champion of Europe in the 1930's and because he was a Jew, had to relinquish his title and was told to leave Germany. Eric and Greta were married in 1940, and they moved from upstate New York to McKee City where they had a large chicken farm. They made their living selling their eggs to local hotels and grocery stores. Her grea accomplishment in life was her son, Mac R. Seelig. Greta was an excellent baker, cook, seamstress and lover of haute cuisine. Greta and Eric opened up a boxing gym. Both Greta and Eric were extraordinary athletes. They both were teachers of the art of boxing and they both trained many local professionals. She will always be known for her strength, fortitude, ability of being direct and her right hook boxing punch. Greta loved music and all things German. She leaves behind her loving son, Mac and his wonderful wife, Kay Seelig; her three grandsons, Jerry (Karen) Seelig, Jeff (Mimi) Seelig, and Jason (Letitia) Seelig; six great-grandchildren; her sister, Lore Heppenheimer of Hollywood, FL; her brother, Stephen (June) Meinstein of Jacksonville, FL and Fleischmanns, NY and her two nieces. She will live on in the memory of those who loved her for strength of character and directness. Relatives and friends are invited to attend graveside services, Friday, August 1st, 10am, at Beth Israel Cemetery, Fire Road & Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township. Shiva will be observed at the home of Mac & Kay Seelig, 625 Lost Pine Way in Galloway, on Friday, August 1st between the hours of 12:00pm and 3:00pm, Saturday, August 2nd between 6:30pm and 9:00pm, and Sunday August 3rd between 12:00pm and 5:00pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the R.N.S. Cancer & Heart Fund, 7223 Ventnor Avenue, Ventnor, NJ 08406. Arr. ROTH-GOLDSTEINS' MEMORIAL CHAPEL, Atlantic City

Gosh, seeing her and Erichs pictures again after all these years has brought so many good memories to mind. I met them when I was a meek 11 year old little boy. Through the years at the gym in Atlantic City he taught me how to box. But they taught me something more important, how to be honest and how to treat people with honor and respect. Boy, I learnt the hard way about her right hook. I could listen to her stories about her and Erich all day and night. I'm rambling on. God speed Mrs.Seelig.

To the Whole Seelig Family,
Your beloved Geemom Greta (I lovingly called her Mama Seelig) showed the spirit and drive that is so evident throughout your family- it is no secret where it originated.
I shall miss her intelligence, humor and passion mixed with a spirit of love. Her language always delivered with direct talk mixed with understanding.

Feeling my own, I can only imagine your loss... I am sorry.

We have all lost one of life's true guideposts.

Greta was a role model for me. I admired her strength and I experienced the depth of her loving heart. She lived life with a fierceness and left us all with memories that cannot be matched. Greta is simply unforgetable!

Dear Mac, Kay and Family,
We share your sorrow in Greta's passing. As a fellow congregant of Beth Israel, we would see Greta and your family occasionally at services. May her memory be for a blessing.
