Irwin Budnick Obituary

BUDNICK, DR. IRWIN - of Boca Raton, FL, formerly of Margate, has passed away. Dr. Budnick practiced pediatrics in the Margate and Atlantic City area for many years. He was Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics of Atlantic City Medical Center, as well as, Chairman of the March of Dimes campaign to eliminate polio and immunize all the local children. He was also involved in the beginning trials of the German measles vaccine and appeared on television in that capacity. In recognition of his contributions to the pediatric care of the children of southern New Jersey, the Atlanticare Regional Medical Center recently named a pediatric treatment room in his honor. Dr. Budnick always regarded his patients as extended family and shared with them their accomplishments as well as their sorrow. He rarely met a person he didn't like. When a health problem in 1987 forced him to retire, he moved to Boca Raton where he again developed many lasting friendships. He is a graduate of Pleasantville High School, where he was the class valedictorian, editor of the school newspaper, and manager of the baseball team. He graduated from both Georgetown University and Georgetown University School of Medicine. He received his MD degree at the age of 23. He served with the US Army, First Armored Division from 1951 to 1953 and was based in Wurzburg, Germany. He is survived by his loving wife Sara; his children, Dr. Glenn Budnick and his wife Lynn of Margate and Mrs. Janet Budnick Bloom and her husband, Dr. Steven Bloom of Andover, MA; his grandchildren, Rachel and Vitaly Zakuta of Newton, MA, Joshua and Manique Bloom of Brighton, MA, Benjamin Bloom of Andover, MA, Matthew Budnick of Margate, and Adam Thomas of New York City and his great-granddaughter, Alexandra Zakuta of Newton, MA who shares his birthday. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A memorial celebration of his life will be held in the fall in Boca Raton, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to the Atlanticare Regional Medical Center Department of Pediatrics or the Ruth Newman Shapiro Cancer and Heart Fund, 7223 Ventnor Avenue, Ventnor, NJ 08406. In the summer of 1964, I slipped of the back porch and ripped my chin open. Mom ran to get a towel, and dad called up Dr. Budnick. Although Dr. Budnick was at the beach, his answering service told us to come right over. Just as we arrived, Dr. Budnick came squishing in, sandy and wet. In no time he was scrubbed, and ready to sew me up. Dr. Budnick deftly stitched as my dad held me down and Mom fainted; and in no time I was patched up, good as new.

Dr. Budnick's office was right at the bus stop, which allowed cheap, easy access for "uptown" patients. His office was always half-full with mothers and children from "uptown" -- at a time when some Downbeach doctors regularly suggested that such patients seek treatment elsewhere.

Dr. Budnick was a real "mensch," and his big broad smile will be sadly missed.

To the Family of Dr. Budnick,
Your father was one of the kindest gentlest man alive. My children never were afraid to go to him. I remember him always letting them hold a silver dollar he always carried. If it wasn't for your father my daughter might not be here today let alone a wife and mother. My prayers are with him. Sorry for your loss.

To the Budnick Family

May God Bless your family during this difficult time. My prayers are with you. Your father was a very kind man . He was also my pediatrician while growing up and the doctor for many, many, other children who I'm sure have fond memories of him. In fact, my grandmother credits him for diagnosing my uncle as having a tumor which led to him having a brain surgery which ultimately saved his life.

Also, he was was one doctor whom I never dred seeing as a kid because he was very gentle and caring. I am now 36 years old and still remember him.

May your memories with him live on forever and May God bring your family peace for he is at rest now.
God Bless.

Just a few memories

My brother was 3 years old and suffering from what would soon be diagnosed as spinal meningitis. Dr. Bud came to our home at 3 am, as Rick's fever was soaring, and saved his life.

I finally stopped seeing Dr Bud when i could no longer fit in the waiting room chairs (well, maybe a few years after i outgrew the chairs)

Warm, comforting, always a smile to calm the nervous patient/parent.

We are richer for having had him in our lives.

My condolences to the family of Dr. Budnick. Dr. Budnick was my doctor in the early 70's, and he was certainly the best doctor any child could have. His patience with children, his comforting words, and his medical expertise will always be remembered by me. Somehow, a trip to Dr. Budnick was never a scary thought for me, you always knew you would be in good hands. Good Doctor, you will be sadly missed!

It saddens us to learn of Irv's passing. We remember fondly our times together in Arizona, and know his memory will be a blessing. Although we live in Arizona and at present are high in the mountains, we remember our friends.

I remember Dr. Budnick making a house call to our home in Ventnor, when I was very young and my sister was sick. I asked him if I was going to get a SHOT to and he got that great smile on his face looked down and said " only if you want one Danny ". We are sad to hear of your loss.

i truely believe that if it wasnt for dr budnick, i myself wouldnt have survived motherhood. i was a completely nervous mother who knew dr budnick's phone number by heart and he opened his office many times on sundays for me, to sooth my fears and nervousness!!
he had a way with children and mothers that i do not think anyone else had.

i think of him often, especially now that my daughter will be a mother soon!!!

bless him and his family.

Dear Budnick Family--I am sincerely saddended to learn of the death of Dr. Budnick. It has been many years since I last saw him or, for that matter, even thought of him. However, when my wife and I started our family in the early 1970's, he was always there to provide the medical and emotional care we needed. Our 2 daughters are now grown, married, and mothers. I can only hope that the pediatricians that treat our granddaughters are as caring and capable as Dr. Budnick.

Most sincerely,

Irv was my cousin by my marriage to his first cousin, Elaine Budnick. Our oldest son, Larry, was his first patient in 1954, as were our subsequent four children. Our entire family is saddened by his death, and we will all miss his smiling demeanor, his gentle way and his unquestioned medical competence. Every condolence and good wish to the entire family.
