Eugene Barbera Obituary

BARBERA, EUGENE C., - If you had the pleasure of knowing Eugene Barbera you were better off for it and if you didn't you truly missed out. By nature he was a solid, down to earth man. A hard worker (with a second to none work ethic) who always.. always put family first. Dad was the perfect role model for his children and grandchildren. He led by example always working very, very hard. We'd follow him with passion and well deserved devotion. Eugene Barbera was originally from South Philadelphia, 13th & Wolf to be exact. When he married Rita Marianni of Port Richmond his stomping grounds became Welsh & Verree in Northeast Philadelphia. He settled in to raise his four children on Ferndale Street and with his gentle smile and helping hand to always lend he became a fixture; a source of strength, comfort and security. Ultimately Eugene & Rita resided in Longport, and Boynton Beach, FL and was rewarded with joy throughout his golden years of life; highlighted just last March by celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary in Italy with Rita, the love of his life. He adored golf, traveling with Rita, loved the beach and ocean, was fanatic about golf, spending time with his children and grandchildren, golf, cigars, football, golf and the Bustleton Lions club. (And did I tell you he loved golf?) He was a food & wine aficionado (man could he cook!) and he was a charming story-teller; a life of the party, real "Mr. Philadelphia" type. Yes, golf became his passion; in fact he'd keep score - yearning for an eraser on the pencil! Simply, if there's a definition of "nice guy" in the dictionary his picture is next to it. He owned and operated Gene's Bar, Front and Norris in Fishtown; then purchased the Palm Theater on Frankford Ave. and then he opened Palm Carwash, Palm Auto and Palm Autobody. (It was there he instilled his remarkable work ethic in his kids) He also owned an Atlantic City cab company. Eugene Barbera was the devoted husband of Rita (Marianni) Barbera. Loving father to Eugene Barbera Jr, Rosemary (Eduardo) Villegas, Dr. Charles (Mary) Barbera, Gary (Linda) Barbera. Grandfather of Lucas, Spencer, Carlos, Marianna and Gary Michael. A viewing will be held Wednesday, August 13th at 9AM followed by a mass at 11AM at Saint Albert The Great, 212 Welsh Rd., Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, 19006. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers kindly send any donations to the Autism Society of Berks County, P.O. Box 6683 Wyomissing, PA 19610

Dear Mrs. Barbera and Family: I don't know if you will remember me, but my early childhood years were spent with you and your family. All I remember was Uncle Gene and Uncle Chick. They were my dad's best friends. I have the greatest memories of a wonderful, gentle man who I called Uncle Gene. May God Bless you all at this difficult time.

I MET GENE AT MELROSE CC. WE PLAYED GOLF EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY. GENE ALWAYS HAD A JOKE AND LOVED TO WIN AT GOLF. EVEN IF HE WON $2.00 HE WOULD SAY HE WAS SENDING THE LIMO TO PICK US UP ON THE NEXT DATE. HE LOVED TO TALK POLITICS AND WHO HE WOULD VOTE FOR THIS PRES. ELECTION. KNOWING GENE HE FILED AN ABSENTEE BALLOT BEFORE HE LEFT. HE WAS A BUDDY AND GOOD FRIEND AND I WILL MISS HIM ALOT.

Mr. Barbera was a man that I looked up to and admired dearly! He was extremely intelligent and a very hard working. Whenever I spoke to him he always gave me such great advice and he probably didn't even know he was doing it. Mr. Barbera's energy and enthusiasim shined through his personality like no other. The man loved a good joke and loved to make people smile and laugh. Any time I saw him he would say "Hey Mike" and smile, those words and his voice will never be forgotten. If you had the opportunity to know him you were very lucky! Gary, Geno, Linda, Rita, Gary Michael, Charles, Rosemary, Eduardo, Spencer, Lucas, Carlos and Marianna I love you all like you were my family and I am always right around the corner. Mr. Barbera You will always be missed and in my heart and prayers...
