Jack Eisenstein Obituary

EISENSTEIN, JACK - died on Tuesday, August 12th, at home after an almost four year battle with salivary gland cancer. Jack was born in Atlantic City...the second son of Louis and Pauline Eisenstein. He graduated from the Atlantic City High school in 1943, served in the army, and upon being discharged, went to TCNJ via the GI bill. He got a Master's Degree from Rutgers and his Doctorate from Fairleigh Dickinson. Jack began his teaching career at Pleasantville and eventually taught at his Alma Mater. He became a guidance counselor and quickly rose through the ranks to become first, the business manager, and then the superintendent of schools...a position that he held for 19 years. He became an educational consultant and served with various organizations. He later became the interim superintendent of the Pleasantville schools...coming full circle. He served on many boards and received numerous awards throughout his lifetime. Two of which came from the schools he attended...TCNJ and the Atlantic City High School. He assisted many people in reaching their goals and took pleasure in seeing them succeed. On July 16th, the Atlantic City High School Athletic Complex was named in his honor. Not only was he a product of the Atlantic City Public Schools, but also an avid supporter of the athletic program. This award tugged at his heartstrings, as he was always a VIKING. He was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his three sons, Phyllis, his parents, Louis and Pauline and his brother, Morris. Jack leaves behind his wife of 30 years, Antonia-Toni (nee Rich), his sons, Michael (Melissa) of Ventnor, Eric (Carole) of Mt. Laurel, and Paul of Longport: Stepson Dr. Boyd (Susan) Dwyer of Maryland: Grandchildren, Jessica, Phillip, Zachary and Matthew Eisenstein and Gregory, Michael and Kevin Dwyer: sisters-in-law, Helen Eisenstein and Phyllis Smith: Brother-in-law, Wilt Bennet. The family will be receiving visitation from 9-11 a.m. on Friday, August 15th, at the Atlantic City High School. Visitation will be immediately followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. Interment will then follow at Beth Israel Cemetery in Egg Harbor Township. A post-funeral reception will be held at Cong. Beth Judah, 700 N. Swarthmore Avenue in Ventnor on Friday, August 15th, 3-5 p.m. Donations to the Dr. Jack Eisenstein Scholarship Fund would be appreciated. They may be sent to the Athletic Director, Frank Campo, at the Atlantic City High School, 1400 N. Albany Avenue, Atlantic City, NJ 08401. However whatever your sympathy expression may be, please be sure that the address is included so you may receive proper acknowledgment. Arr. ROTH-GOLDSTEINS' MEMORIAL CHAPEL, Atlantic City

As a frightened freshman entering ACHS, how comforting it was to have had Mr. Eisenstein as my teacher. During my 4 years at ACHS (class of '61) he remained my favorite teacher...just knowing "Big Jack" was to love him. I believe to this day I made the ACHS cheerleading squad as he was on the judging committee. He will always hold a special place in my heart. My sympathy and prayers to his family.

From all of us at The College of New Jersey (Trenton State College), we wish to offer our most profound sympathy, but also our heartfelt appreciation, to the Eisenstein Family. We thank you for sharing Jack with us. He was a tremendous source of both counsel and support for many, including college presidents,TCNJ athletic coaches, classmates and professional colleagues. More than anything else, he was a wonderful friend and his presence will be felt by all of us for years to come.

To the Eisenstein Family, please know you are always welcome on our campus and as members of our community.

Sincerely,

Peter Manetas

I first met Jack Eisenstein at the start of my freshman year at ACHS, September 1951. Not only was he my Freshman Football Coach, he was my Community Civics' teacher.

He worked us hard both on the field and in the classroom which I must admit was not fully appreciated at the time. I quickly learned though, how important Mr. Eisenstein's "life lessons" would be and how well they would serve me over the next 50 years.

Living these past 32 years so far away in Minnesota I didn't have many opportunities to thank him for all he did for me. I last saw him and his wife Toni at the annual ACHS-HSHS game some years ago. We had a nice exchange about the good old days of the 50's. Jack and I both agreed how nice it would be if we could only turn the clock back; be 18 again, if for only one Friday night under the lights at Bader Field.

We'll miss you Jack.

We send our condolences to his family, Charles and Linda Moore

To all of the Eisenstein family: I want to extend my sympathy to you in your loss. Jack was one of the best-liked teachers at PHS back in the 50s and had many friends there. If I remember correctly (and maybe I don't), wasn't he also one of our football coaches? I graduated in 1954. Two of his close friends were Marshall ("Mart") Errickson who went on to become Supt. of Schools in Freehold Twp. in 1953-54 and left us all in October 1989. Margaret ("Midge") his wife, who was my shorthand teacher, has for 44 years been one of my very dearest friends. Mart has probably been part of Jack's "welcoming committee" to his new life. Midge has always spoken warmly of Jack and I will let her know of his passing. She is still living in Freehold in a lovely retirement community. I moved to San Francisco in 1969 and hadn't realized that Jack went on to such an illustrious career in education there at ACHS. He will be remembered warmly by thousands of his students and associates. God bless you and may your memories continue to comfort you.

Jack Eisenstein hired me in 1973 for a teaching position at Atlantic City High School. As a boss, he was first-rate. As a human being, it was difficult to top him. He never engaged in the meaningless educational jargon that we hear so often today. He didn't have to..you knew that the kids of Atlantic City were his first priority.Jack was a totally hands- on administrator. He was everywhere, supporting athletic teams, clubs, drama and the like. He could be tough, but he was ALWAYS fair.To Toni, Mike, Eric, and Paul, I offer my deepest sympathies. Your loss is immeasurable, but how fortunate you were to have such a wonderful person in your lives.

We will not see his like again.
