Sydney Dyer Obituary



DYER, SYDNEY E., - of Elmer, son of the late Sydney, Jr. and Sylvia Dyer, passed away at Elmer Community Hospital on August 30th, 2008. He was born on September 19, 1925 in South Vineland. During his early school years the family moved to Millville where he attended R.D. Wood School. Later, they moved to Elmer and he continued grade school and entered the Bridgeton High School. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and when he would have graduated in 1944, his mother, along with other mothers of service men received his H.S. Diploma at the Graduation Service. Sydney had his military training at Bainbridge, Md. And Norfolk, Va. and served on the U.S.S. Day 225 in the Pacific area. He was discharged in 1946 and worked at Ferrucute in Bridgeton and E.I. DuPont in Carney's Point, NJ. After working there for over 35 years, the plant was closed and he worked at DuPont in Delaware until he retired in 1983. In 1957 he married Doreen (May) Dyer and joined South Vineland United Methodist Church in 1958. He enjoyed traveling and took many pictures at the various places. Sydney and his wife traveled to England three times, a heritage Tour to France, Germany and Switzerland, the Holy Lands, and the Scandinavia Countries. He was a member of the Evanoff Travel Club and went on many bus trips, including Alaska. In 1997 he became disabled after back surgery and had to use a wheel chair. He still traveled and continued going to his Navy reunions. Sydney was a Life Member of the Gr. N.J. Conference Historical Society and also a life member of the V.F.W. Post 1259 in Elmer, NJ. He served on the Board of Trustees, Administrative Board and Finance Committee at the S. Vineland U.M.C. and attended the Wednesday Fellowship Group. He also served as an Usher and joined the Senior Choir. In spite of his disabilities, he continued attending Church and its activities, liked to go on "jaunts" to Lancaster and dinner theatres. Besides his wife of 51 years, he is survived by: one sister: June Carr and her husband Paul of Franklinville; one brother-in-law: Theodore W. May, Sr. (Dorothy), of Vineland; one sister-in-law: Maldonetta May, also of Vineland. He had 10 nieces and Nephews and several Great and great great nieces & Nephews His funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in the South Vineland United Methodist Church, 2748 S. Main Rd., Vineland, NJ where relatives & friends will be received from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Siloam Cemetery, Vineland.
