Joseph Barrasso Obituary

BARRASSO, JOSEPH, "FONSE", 79 - of Margate, September 6, 2008. Beloved husband of Judith. Treasured son of Rose and Joseph Barrasso. Fonse moved to Atlantic City at age four. He attended local grade schools and was a 1946 graduate of Atlantic City High School where he played varsity football. Fonse was a member of the Atlantic City Beach Patrol during his High School and College years, which he always insisted was the best job he ever had. He graduated from George Washington University in 1951 and received his Masters in Civil Engineering from Lehigh University in 1953, where he also did a Teaching and Research Fellowship in 1952 and 1953. Fonse's engineering career began with the DuPont Company in Wilmington DE where he was involved in projects located in the United States and Europe. He was employed for a time with the Federal Aviation Administration, the New Jersey Expressway Authority and as a consulting engineer in local Engineering firms. He was the City Engineer for the City of Atlantic City in the 1970's and again in the 1990's, a job he enjoyed, serving the city he grew up in and always loved. Fonse loved life. He was an avid tennis player and was outdoors constantly. He enjoyed the Boardwalk and his very best day included playing tennis and then discussing tennis with dear friend Basil, getting on the boardwalk for his morning bike ride and again in the afternoon for a walk with lifelong friend Stanley. He treasured his family which included many cousins and always looked forward to holidays with the Rauzzino family. Fonse is survived by his loving wife of 30 years Judy (Perry) his extended family of sisters and brothers in law, many cousins and their children and grandchildren. He leaves behind many friendships that have lasted a lifetime. His beautiful spirit will be forever missed. There will be a Mass celebrating his life on Friday September 12 at 10:30, at Blessed Sacrament Church, Jerome & Ventnor Avenues, Margate. Visitation at the church from 9:30 AM. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, those whose wish to do so may send a contribution to the American Heart Association of the charity of one's choice. Arrangements by the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home.

Judy,
We are all so deeply saddened by the loss of Uncle Fonse. I will miss him very much and I'm not quite sure what Dad is going to do without him. Please know how sorry we all are and how much he will be missed by everyone. I was lucky to have him as my godfather.
love,

Judy, we lost one of the best. In our children's eyes, he'll still be Paul Newman's double. Take care,

The Fonze was a great guy with a warm heart and a great sense of humor. I'm glad to have known him and I'm glad to have been able to tell him that he was "cool" before it was cool to be cool. He laughed when I added that he was "Perry Como cool."

Rest in Peace Fonze. You were liked, you were loved and although you will be missed, your presence will always be felt at the courts.
