Saul Stuart Mally M.D.

Saul Mally Obituary

MALLY, SAUL STUART, M.D., - passed away on Sunday, September 07, 2008 in Atlantic City after a pro-longed illness. His life was devoted to the practice and advancement of the medical profession as a surgeon, teacher, mentor and leader. In 1992, he was awarded the American College of Surgeon's most prestigious national award honoring him for "a career marked by his dedication to his patients and community", and "as a clinical surgeon who endeavored to improve the quality of surgical care" both locally and through his professional contributions. After graduating from Atlantic City High School in 1943, Dr. Mally attended Ursinus College where he graduated summa cum laude in just three years. He enrolled in Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia where he received his degree in medicine in 1949. Dr. Mally later interned at Atlantic City Medical Center and received a doctoral teaching fellowship in Pathology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School along his path to becoming a Board Certified Surgeon. Dr. Mally met his future wife, Annette Meltz, while ice skating at Convention Hall. After a whirlwind romance they married and moved to New York City where they began their new family. Both of their children, daughter Adrienne and son Craig were born during this time in New York. Dr. Mally completed his surgical residency at New York University-Bellevue Medical Center in New York City. He then entered the Navy where he served as a Lieutenant Commander and medical officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Leyte. Upon leaving the Navy, he returned to Atlantic City to begin private practice. Professional leadership and commitment were also important to him. Dr. Mally was on staff at both Shore Memorial Hospital and Atlantic City Hospital. He served two terms as President of the Shore Memorial Hospital Staff and two terms as Chairman of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Mally also served for 20 years on Shore Memorial's Board of Trustees. Dr. Mally served as President of the New Jersey Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and was elected to the national Board of Governors for the American College of Surgeons as well. In addition, he was a founding member and president of both the American Trauma Society and the Society of Surgeons of New Jersey. Locally, Dr. Mally served on the executive boards of the Atlantic County Cancer Society, the Ruth Newman Shapiro Cancer and Heart Association, and the Atlantic City Planning Commission. As a board member of Guarantee Bank, (later National Westminster Bank of New Jersey), he chaired the committee to annually select and present the national Sheen Award for outstanding contributions to the medical profession. The Sheen Award has honored 39 of the foremost members of the nation's medical community since 1968. If Dr. Mally wasn't in surgery, or treating patients, it was likely that he had literally gone fishing. His ability to find and catch fish was well known, and it was his life-long passion, capped by his worldwide fishing expeditions. He was also known as the go-to guy for anything that needed fixing, whether it was a broken bike, a jammed fishing reel or injured neighborhood surfers He had a basement workshop that was the amusement of his friends because he collected every spare part and tool "just in case" he might need it someday. Well, that day came frequently for those same friends needing parts no longer obtainable. His most cherished workshop creation was a replica of his favorite fishing boat, the Yellow Banana, which used by his first grandchild as a cradle. He will be remembered by his loving family, wife Annette, sister Claire Levine, children Adrienne and Craig Mally, and grandchildren; Skip Sommers, Alison and Jason Mally. Respecting Dr. Mally's wishes, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Shore Memorial Health Foundation.

Dear Mrs. Mally:

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Mally. It was always a pleasure to see you two at the Linwood Country Club. I was lucky enough to run into Craig recently and had heard that Dr. Mally had been sick. Just want ed to send my condolences, and if you would please forward this to Craig.

Adrienne was one of my childhood friends and I have many happy memories of going to the Mally house. I was always in awe of Dr. and Mrs. Mally. They reminded me of John and Jackie Kennedy only better looking. They always made me feel very welcome in their home.

I lost touch with Adrienne but I would bump into Dr. Mally occasionally over the years and I would always remind him of my name and he would remember who I was and we would chat.

He was always such a gracious gentleman and a genuinely nice man besides all his professional accomplishments.

My heart goes out to Mrs.Mally, Adrienne, Craig and the rest of your family. My prayers are with you.

Uncle Saul was so always cool! Gary and I adored him, and we just always hoped to be asked to go fishing with him. Remembering when he and Aunt Annette surprised us by taking us to buy our first bicycles, has been permanently sketched into my memory. I also have a picture of Stephen in the mini "Yellow Banana" with his cousin, Skip. We're thinking of you all, Aunt Annette, Craig, and Adrienne, and love you even more.

Dr. Mally was the father of one of my childhood friends. I remember him very fondly. He was a great father, a wonderful fisherman and one of the handsomest men i've ever known. I know he was a wonderful surgeon and doctor and will be sorely missed by the community and his family, Annette, Adrienne and Craig, and all his friends.

Dr. Mally will be sorely missed by many. He was a great clinician and surgeon, but even moreso, he was a great person. I will miss chatting with him as I walk to the Montgomery Ave beach.

Very fond memories of the Doc and the time spent with him, Nelson, and Big John. He will truly be missed not only by those who knew him but by those he so unselfishly helped.
