Frederick Layton Obituary



LAYTON, FREDERICK S., JR., 82 - of Mays Landing, Layton, passed away on September 25, 2008. Born in Vineland, he was a lifelong resident of Mays Landing. He was a WWII veteran serving in the Army Air Corps. Fred was a self-employed Master Plumber and a retired trucker. He was a member of Unity Lodge F&AM #96 where he just received his 55 year pin and American Legion Post 254, both of Mays Landing. In his leisure time he loved roller skating, boating, fishing, and snow skiing. Preceded in death by his wife Katherine (Bridges) Layton and son F. Stearns Layton III, he is survived by his wife Margaret (Gursky) Layton; three children: Sharon Gordon of Mays Landing, Susan Layton Small (Charles) of Hawaii, and Melissa Davenport (Albert) of Mays Landing; stepchildren: Natalie Schwimer of Arizona, Jennifer Basile of Vineland, and Coleen Basile of Mays Landing; seven grandchildren: Tracy Gordon, Kelly Gordon, Robert Adair, Lauren, Jennifer, and Rachel Davenport, and Christopher Thomas; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by his best friend Bob Phillips, sister-in-law Stella Garrett, and his dog "Buddy." Services will be held on Tuesday, 11 AM at the Presbyterian Church of Mays Landing, 6001 Main Street, Mays Landing where friends may call at the church's fellowship hall from 10 AM until the time of the service. Masonic services will be held at 10:30 AM. Burial will be in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery. (Info and condolences: www.boakesfuneralhome.com)

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Fred. He was always so nice to me especially when we lived across the street from the Layton's on Taylor Avenue. Please know that Fred and Sterns are in my thoughts and prayers.
