Annetta Miles Obituary

Published by The Press of Atlantic City on Sep. 28, 2008.

MILES, ANNETTA MOORE, - of Ocean City, died on September 21. She was the wife of the late Colonel Charles Harlow Miles, Jr. After 25 years as an Army wife, she had lived in Ocean City for 50 years. Mrs. Miles was born in 1911 in Woodbury. She was a graduate of Woodbury High School and Pierce Junior College in Philadelphia. She married Harlow Miles a month after he graduated from West Point in 1933. They were stationed at Pearl Harbor when the attack came on December 7, 1941. Their house was strafed and Mrs. Miles hid her two daughters, Phyllis and Carol Ann, under mattresses and told them fairy tales as her husband rushed out to his battle station at Hickam Field. During the war she worked as a Gray Lady at Ft. Dix with wounded soldiers, while waiting for her husband's return from the South Pacific, which happened in June of 1945. She lived in many places during her Army life, her favorites being Hawaii, Fort Adams (Newport, RI), San Francisco, West Point, and Heidelberg, Germany. For nine years, Mrs. Miles worked as secretary-receptionist of the Ocean City Tabernacle. She was a member of the Margate Community Church and a former deaconess and former president of the Dorcas Guild of that church. She was a past president of the Colony Club of Ocean City, a member of the Ocean City Historical Society, the Cultural Arts Center, and the Victorian Society. She also served on the board of the Gardens Civic Association. For many years, she worked as a volunteer for Shore Memorial Hospital as well as for the Ocean City Library. She enjoyed playing a fine game of bridge. She delighted in a good meal well presented and loved to travel and to listen to the music at her church and at Ocean City's Music Pier. She enjoyed much time with her friends here and afar and often baked dozens of cookies for visiting family and friends. Each year she marveled at the migrating birds, cherished every pink rose on her Queen Elizabeth grandiflora bush, and was delighted to live long enough to enjoy the conclusion to the Harry Potter book series. Her sister Doris Woolman lives in Ocean City. Her children are: Phyllis Frederick of Saratoga Springs, NY; Carol Ann Martz of Los Alamos, NM; Pamela Miles of Indian Rocks Beach, FL, and Ocean City; and Birch Miles of Ocean City. She leaves nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Family graveside services were held at the cemetery of the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, where her husband was buried. Memorial contributions can donated to The Resident Council and sent to The Shores at Wesley Manor, 2201 Bay Avenue, Ocean City, NJ 08226, attn: Christmas Fund.
