Walter Adams Obituary



ADAMS, WALTER DeWITT, JR., "De", "Daddy", "Pop Pop", 93 - of Pleasantville, died peacefully on September 30, 2008 with his daughter Nancy by his side. In the weeks prior to his passing, his family spent countless hours with him, sharing cherished memories of the man they dearly loved. De was born in Roanoke, Virginia on December 11, 1914 to Walter DeWitt and Mary (Lentz) Adams, Sr. He moved to Pleasantville as a young boy and lived there the remainder of his life. He married the love of his life, Laura (nee Price), on October 30, 1942 and spent 65 years as her devoted husband. Together they raised two daughters, Joan and Nancy. As a young man, De worked as manager of Thompkins Ice Cream Store in Pleasantville. De proudly served his country as Sergeant-Technician 4th Grade in the United States Army Anti Tank 4th Infantry Division during World War II. He landed on D-Day on Normandy Beach. He was awarded the Bronze Star, for his bravery under fire as well as the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal- Arrowhead (Bronze) and the Good Conduct Medal. He was also awarded a Distinguished Service Medal from the French government and was recognized by the State of New Jersey in June 2000 for his wartime service. Upon his return from the war, De went to work at Bond Bread as driver/route salesman where he worked for 33 years until his retirement. De was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Mary, brother Frankie, sisters Anna, Ruth, Mabel, Helen, Mary and Sarah. He was also predeceased by his son-in-law James F. Conover, Sr. and mother and father- in-law, Mark and Hazel Price. Surviving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife Laura, grateful daughters, Joan Conover of Egg Harbor Township and Nancy Leeds and her husband Chuck of Linwood. Also surviving are his devoted grandchildren: James F. Conover, Jr. (Renee) and Nancy Sansom (Ron) of Egg Harbor Township, Mike Leeds (Jessica) of Northfleld, and Mark Leeds (Danielle) of Somers Point and great-grandchildren: Sara and Megan Conover and Laura, Kate and Ronny Sansom of Egg Harbor Township and Lexy, Ryan and Andrew Leeds of Northfield. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, October 3, 2008 at Adams Perfect Funeral Home, 1650 New Road, Northfield from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held immediately following at 3:00 p.m. Donations may by made in De's memory to Asbury United Methodist Church, 20 Asbury Avenue, Egg Harbor Township, NJ 08234.
