William F. "Bill" O'Neill Jr.

William O'Neill Obituary

O'NEILL, WILLIAM F., JR., "BILL" 82 - of Margate, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 after a long illness. Bill was born in Atlantic City and spent his childhood in Atlantic City and Ventnor. He attended Atlantic City High School until he joined the Navy in 1944. After being honorably discharged in 1946, Bill worked at the Margate Post Office. In 1950, he joined the Atlantic City Police Department where he attained the rank of Sergeant. He loved his job as a police officer and really enjoyed working in the ID Bureau. Retiring in 1988 after 38 years on the force, Bill had a second career as a Court Aide with the Atlantic County Superior Court for 10 years. This was a perfect choice for him as it kept him involved in law enforcement until he officially retired in 1998. He was a congregant and former usher at Blessed Sacrament Church. Living in Margate for 54 years, Bill was a family man who loved having his five children and their friends around him. He looked forward to when his sons had their friends over and received the nickname "Shorty" as all the guys towered over him. Bill was a huge sports fan and looked forward to football season each year so that he could root for his beloved Notre Dame. He also was a big Mets fan and enjoyed cheering them on each season. One of his favorite things to do was spend time with and spoil his grandchildren which he managed to do at every opportunity. Bill will be sadly missed by his devoted wife of 58 years, Regina (Jean), his three sons, Raymond (Ann) of Northfield, William of Northfield, and David (Lorraine) of Ventnor; his daughter, Laura Fox (Jerry) of Somers Point; his sister, Mary Collins of Margate; his grandchildren, Michael, Bryan and Kerrin; special niece, Peggy Flanagan and her daughter Katherine as well as many other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Nellie O'Neill, his sister, Patsy, his daughter, Susan and his grandson, William, IV. Relatives and friends may pay their respects from 9am to 10am on Friday, October 31 st at Blessed Sacrament Church in Margate. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at loam. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Redeemer Hospice, 6550 Delilah Rd., Suite 501, Egg Harbor Township, NJ 08234 or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home.

I am proud to say that I had the opportunity to work for and with Bill in the Police Dept. He was a great mentor, I learned alot from him. Most of all, I remember him having a calming effect on those around him.
