Mildred Riggs Obituary

RIGGS, MILDRED E., 89 - of Atlantic City died Sunday, November 4, 2007, at home. She was born March 3, 1918 to Ida Greaves and Louis Brathwaite in Atlantic City. She attended the local public schools and was a lifetime member of St. Augustine Episcopal Church, where she served on the Saint Ann's Guild, the Episcopal Church Women and was a member of the Sons and Daughters of the Islands. In 1935, Mildred and the late Thomas Hughes were blessed with a son, her only child, the late Leonard Hughes, who ultimately enriched her life with grandchildren. Mildred, the consummate homemaker, also enjoyed watching sporting events such as baseball and boxing. She also enjoyed playing pinochle with her sisters and friends. In later years, Mildred was to find a new life in New York City as a manicurist. There she met the late Paul Riggs. They shared a life together for 20 years until his death. After his death, Mildred returned to Atlantic City at the beckoning of her son, Leonard, where she renewed her relationship with her church family. As it was to pass, the good Lord took her son home, but blessed her with a grandson, Kenneth Hughes, as her primary care-giver. She is survived by: grandchildren, Kenneth and Cullen, both of Pleasantville, Thea of Loudoun, VA; great-grandchild, Kennetha; two great-great grandchildren; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 2PM on Monday, November 12, 2007 at St. Augustine Episcopal Church, 1709 Arctic Avenue, Atlantic City, where friends may call from Noon. Burial will be in Atlantic City Cemetery, Pleasantville. Arrangements entrusted to Greenidge Funeral Home.
