James Liu Obituary



LIU, DR. JAMES TIEN-CHING 65 - of Egg Harbor Township, long time professor of information and computer sciences, died peacefully at his Egg Harbor Township home on Saturday, December 1, 2007, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 65. He was born June 14, 1942, in Taipei, Taiwan, to the late Mu-Tu Liu and Hong-Chou Chen Liu. He attended National Taiwan University in Taipei, graduating with a bachelors degree in accounting in 1964. He continued his studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, earning a masters degree in business administration in 1967. On August 26, 1971, he was married to Jean-Yun Kao in Taipei, Taiwan. James graduated from Yale University, New Haven, CT, in 1973 where he received a Ph.D. in Operations Research. He started his information technology career in Hong Kong before accepting a teaching position at Tatung University in Taipei, Taiwan. In 1977, James, Jean and their two children moved to South Jersey and he began teaching at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Their third child, a daughter, was born in 1980. Dr. Liu taught computer science and information systems for 27 years before retiring in 2004. He also served as Dean of Professional Studies from 1988 to 1992. James and his family were residents of Pomona for ten years before moving to Linwood, where they remained for 15 years. In 2005, they moved to Egg Harbor Township. James is survived by his wife, Jean, Egg Harbor Township, NJ; his daughter and her husband, Kathy and Billy Seabrook, Fairfield, CT; his daughter, Karen Liu, New York City; his granddaughter, Ashley Seabrook, Fairfield, CT; three brothers, Thomas Liu, Los Alamitos, CA; Tien-Shou Liu, Taipei, Taiwan; Tensei Liu, Saga, Japan and one sister Po-Jin Chou, Taipei, Taiwan. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, and his beloved son, Jason. Funeral services for Dr. James T. Liu will be held at 1:00 PM., Friday, December 7, 2007 at Adams - Perfect Funeral Home, 1650 New Road, Northfield. Burial will follow funeral services at Laurel Memorial Park in Pomona. Arrangements entrusted to, and written condolences may be left for the family at www.adams-perfect.com.

I'm sorry I missed his services. I remember having him for Operating Systems and Assembly Language. I especially remember mutual starvation and deadlock from operating systems. Thank-you for being a teacher.

I was happy to have Dr. Liu as my advisor when I was in Stockton because we both are from Taiwan. He helped me a lot on gettting the right coures and finish school. I think he is in a good place now.

Dr. Liu was one of my greatest professor, the one that I give the most respect and admired. He had help and taught me many good things that I'll be using for the rest of my life. Dr. Liu will always be in our hearts.

I did not know Professor Liu very well nor for very long, but I am saddened by his death. He was my academic advisor at Stockton College and assisted me whenever I needed advice about credit-courses for my degree.
