Jack Briggs Obituary

Jack Harrison Briggs, 81, of Hopewell, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 23, 2008. He is preceded in death by his three brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Sarah; two daughters, Darlene Shelton and her husband Cary, Donna Gladwell and her husband Robert; three granddaughters; and one great- granddaughter, several nieces & nephews and a loving church family.

Originally from Mount Holly N.C., he joined the Merchant Marines in 1945 at the age of 17, where he stormed the beaches on D-Day. He also served during the Korean War from October 1950 to October 1952 and then joined the Army Reserves until 1956 when he moved to Hopewell. He joined the Hopewell Police Department in 1956 and retired in 1981 at the rank of captain.

After retiring he and his wife moved to Charles City where they attended Elko Union Church and he served as a deacon and was awarded the title of Deacon Emeritus.

The family will receive friends on Monday August 25, 2008 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 214 North 6th Ave., where services will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 26, 2008. Interment to follow at Bermuda Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Elko Union Church Building Fund, 6861 Elko Road, Sandston VA, 23150.
