Herbert Thweatt Obituary

Mr. Herbert Thweatt Sr., 78, of Prince George, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Medical Center, Richmond, Va.

He was born in Prince George, Va., on March 26, 1930, to the late Roy Thweatt and Julia Thweatt Bowman. He was predeceased by his sister, Isaphine, and by his brothers, Earl, Roy, David, Albert and George. He was greatly loved and will be genuinely missed.

Mr. Thweatt was a product of the Prince George County Public School system. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army both as an active duty soldier and reservist and retired after 24 years of service to his country. He worked at Allied Chemical in Hopewell, and later became the owner of Herbert Thweatt & Son Refuse Co., Prince George. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Bayview Lodge #64, San Francisco. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 120, Prince George. Mr. Thweatt was a faithful and lifelong member of the Union Branch Baptist Church, Prince George, where he sang in the choir until his health declined.

Mr. Thweatt is survived by his former spouse and partner, Mrs. Clara L. Thweatt; his children, Mr. Herbert Thweatt Jr., of Pago Pago, American Samoa, MSgt USAF (Ret.) Glenn Thweatt (Jacqueline) of Crestview, Fla., Ms. Michelle Thweatt Ledbetter of Prince George, SFC Michael Thweatt of Palm Bay, Fla., and Dr. Vonda Thweatt of Prince George; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Ann, Zachary, Ariel, and Jamie; his siblings, Mrs. Alvenia Ford (William), Mrs. Florence Randall, Mrs. Grover Randall, Mr. Arrow Thweatt Sr. (Claudia), and Mr. Timothy Thweatt Sr. (Dorothy); and his sisters-in-law, Mrs. Bernice Thweatt, Mrs. Corrine Thweatt, Mrs. Eloise Thweatt, and Mrs. Margie Thweatt. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Special appreciation and acknowledgements are extended to Evangelist Lucy Gray, Mr. Bubba Starks, and Deacon Alexander Thweatt for their ministry to and friendship with Mr. Herbert Thweatt.

The family will receive family and friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the Tucker's Funeral Home, 415 Halifax St. Petersburg, VA 23803. A homegoing celebration will be held at noon Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Union Branch Baptist Church, Prince George, with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Andrew J. White, pastor, will officiate at the services. Family and friends will assemble at 11:30 a.m. the day of the service at the Union Branch Baptist Church, Prince George.
