Richard Jones Obituary

On Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, God called to rest Mr. Richard Antonio Jones of Newport News, Va.

Affectionately known as "Ricky" or "Gutta Man," Richard, age 23, was born on Sept. 24, 1984, to Kimberly R. Morgan and Raymond Briggs. Richard loved to play basketball and hang out with family and friends. He spent most of his early life in Newport News but returned to Petersburg in his teen years where he attended Petersburg High School. He was currently employed at Smithfield Packaging in Newport News.

He is preceded in death by his brother, André Jones.

Richard leaves to cherish his memories, two precious sons whom he loved dearly, Dejon Antonio and Camryn Greene, both of Newport News, Va.; mother, Kimberly R. Morgan (William) of Matoaca, Va.; father, Raymond Briggs of Georgia; a devoted second mother, Naleda Freeman; a devoted stepfather, Raymond Freeman; five sisters, Christine Jones of Matoaca, Va., Teronia Edmonds of Hopewell, Va., Sabrina Green (JaQuane), Ramonia Knight (Kelvin) and Ebony Freeman, all of Newport News, Va.; five brothers, Arthur Jones of Blackstone, Va., Andrew and Terence Jones, both of Petersburg, Va., Robert and André Edmonds, both of Newport News, Va.; devoted and loving grandparents, Helen Jones and Deloris Shippy (Fred), both of Petersburg, Va., Louis Wingard (Waynenetta) of Petersburg, Va., and Eugene Bowles of North Carolina; two aunts, Michelle Jones (Gueffner) and Cynthia Parham (Carl), both of Petersburg, Va.; one uncle, Clyde Jones of Petersburg, Va.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, including a few devoted friends, Merlyn Lance, Marcus Ruffin, Tonya Greene and Jarohn Parham, all of Newport New, Va.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at the chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., 102 South Ave., Petersburg, Va.; Elder Paul Tolbert of Emmanuel Apostolic Temple, Petersburg, officiating. Interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.

Honorary and active pallbearers are asked to assemble at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral establishment.

I want to send my condolences to the family and friends. I have know Rick for the pass 2 years and he was a great guy. Loving and free spirited he also blessed me with the greatest gift in this world. Rick I know you are there somewhere me and Elijah miss you a lot. You will continue to be in our hearts.

Words can not express how much Rick has meant to so many people in their lives. He could brighten up a room with just his smile alone. Rick was one of those people that could cheer you up when you were having a bad day. He did crazy gestures, said the most craziest things to make you laugh & just enjoyed life altogether. He meant the world to me. He meant the world to all of his friends & family. All of my condolences to the family and much love. God bless you all!

Precious Memories

I have such precious memoriesof a church of long ago.That's where I learned about God's loveand the joy I've come to know.Week after week my familywalked through the church front door.We always felt such peace at churchand felt God's blessings pour.I grew up in that little churchfor years I worshipped there.I grew to love the young and oldfor I knew that they did care.Although a little child was II knew that God loved me.You see these faithful friends of minetaught me of Calvary's tree.That church is where I asked the Lordto come into my heart.They baptized me and watched me growand encouraged me from the start.As a child I did not knowthe treasure that I had.I grew up with a church familywho always made me glad.Great memories of those folks I haveI cherish everyone.From time to time I think abouteach person one by one.I'll never forget that little churchGod blessed me that I know.I thank God for the years I hadat that church so long ago.

My God

My God has always been with me,Through each and every day.I tried to pretend I could not see,And did things my own way.I went to church and read His word,Taught my kids that He does care.But often times my faith was weak,And I didn't make time for prayer.

Then one day God changed my life,He gently nudged my heart."It's time my child to give me more,I need you all not part."I knew He'd always been with me,I felt such guilt and shame.I know I don't deserve my God,But He loves me just the same.

It's hard for me to understand,Just why He stayed with me.But the words in His book are very clear,With you I will always be.At times I am just speechless,At the wonder of God's love.He 's never turned away from me,He watches me from above.

My loved one has left he has gone home
To live with Jesus, for ever more,
His angel Mom saw his suffering,
And God sent her to bring him home.

Oh how I miss him Oh so much
For he did mean the world to me,
The days are long and nights so drear
My home is empty without him near.

Through all the years he has been
My faithful and most loyal friend,
He has suffered much, God knew his pain
Living with Jesus, he will never suffer again.

God's pearly gates swing open wide
My loved one is entering, what praising inside
Oh what love and beauty he beholds,
Strolling now through the streets of gold!

He is having a wonderful time in Heaven
Away from... all hurt suffering and pain,
He is walking now on streets of gold
No more suffering and never grow old.

He is now enjoying his mansion on high

It's good to be in the Presence of the Lord,

A Peaceful Walk

There's a little path
Going down in the field,
It leads into the forest
Which offers it a shield

The path will fade
As the leaves take over
The stillness there,
Is like none other

The silence of the trees
The stillness of the air
The nature all around
Is what God sent us to share!

A little farther down the way,
Is a parting, and a little brook
Where water flows so gently
Figures dance in it, if you only look.

Then staring at the trees so tall
You see the sun glimmer down
Through limbs and branches
---touching down to the ground

The walk in the woods
Has turned into a peaceful time
That leads you to see
God's loving sign,
His creation!!

To me the best time of the day is early morning,
when all is fresh and new. Yesterday is in the past
and I have a brand new day to experience. I love
to sit on my deck outside and just gaze at the hills.
There is so much peace and tranquility in the early
mornings. The fog in the hills slowly rises as the sun
peeks through, and the birds begin their day, flittering
around, in search of food and welcoming the day.
I enjoy just sitting, browsing and talking to the Lord,
and this time of the day belongs only to Him.

I have written a few poems to express early
morning feelings, and hope you enjoy them.

Father, when I think of all the wondrous things
You have done for me,
All the times I felt I could not go on,
And then, You were there, I could see.

I felt Your presence there to lift me up,
To help me on my way
To reassure me that You were near
And would listen to all I had to say.

I sat there and said a prayer,
That is all I had to do.

You heard my every want
You listened without a word
Then patiently You answered me
My every word was heard.

Stairway To Heaven

I can only imagine but by eye of faith
I picture a great stairway into Heaven
As I start to ascend it
A snow white robe I'll be given

Everything that surrounds me
Will be made with precision
I've so longed for this moment
Since my most important decision

My desire to make Heaven my home
And see my family follow me
I have prayed for many years
This Blessed sight to see

Now with each step worries cease
Perfect love I've been given
I'm content now with sweet peace
As I climb the stairway to Heaven

The angels are lined up on each side
Every step of the way
I often wondered if there's be a crowd
And I'd have to make my way

But today must just be "my day"
I'm getting all the attention
Higher and higher I climb still
As I make this ascension

My Heavenly Father as I near Thee
I am so filled with excitement
Just to see your precious face
Will bring such enlightment

Seems now I can almost fly
Although I've not been given wings
But my longing has been answered
At last I can lift my voice to sing

Oh how I love Jesus
Because He first loved me I know
Was the song the choir was singing
On the night He saved my soul

I see a figure walking towards me
With the fairest face to see
And a smile and outstretched arms
As He reaches out for me

I've climbed the stairway to Heaven
Greeted by God's only son
I know there's Glory awaiting
When my life on earth was done

The only real pleasure is Salvation the good old fashion kind
Where it brings you to your feet and refreshes your mind

My God

My God has always been with me,Through each and every day.I tried to pretend I could not see,And did things my own way.I went to church and read His word,Taught my kids that He does care.But often times my faith was weak,And I didn't make time for prayer.

Then one day God changed my life,He gently nudged my heart."It's time my child to give me more,I need you all not part."I knew He'd always been with me,I felt such guilt and shame.I know I don't deserve my God,But He loves me just the same.

It's hard for me to understand,Just why He stayed with me.But the words in His book are very clear,With you I will always be.At times I am just speechless,At the wonder of God's love.He 's never turned away from me,He watches me from above.
Amazing FriendThe morning light shone bright in my room,But something didn’t feel quite right.I opened my eyes and crawled out of bed,So weak it took all my might.As I stood there alone I felt something stir,Someone was there with me.I felt such peace and a warmth filled my heart,My God was comforting me.I closed my eyes and listened for God,The sun shining on my face.I felt so alive so fresh and brand new,He covered me with His grace.I wanted to stay in that place forever,Taking in all He could give.But He led me from there saying, “Go my child,I’ll teach you how to live.”Late that night when my day was all through,God’s presence still filled the air.He guided my day, each step and each word,He went with me everywhere.He is so amazing; He is my best friend,No other can compare.I trusted in Him and He made my path straight,I know He is everywhere.

Precious Memories

I have such precious memoriesof a church of long ago.That's where I learned about God's loveand the joy I've come to know.Week after week my familywalked through the church front door.We always felt such peace at churchand felt God's blessings pour.I grew up in that little churchfor years I worshipped there.I grew to love the young and oldfor I knew that they did care.Although a little child was II knew that God loved me.You see these faithful friends of minetaught me of Calvary's tree.That church is where I asked the Lordto come into my heart.They baptized me and watched me growand encouraged me from the start.As a child I did not knowthe treasure that I had.I grew up with a church familywho always made me glad.Great memories of those folks I haveI cherish everyone.From time to time I think abouteach person one by one.I'll never forget that little churchGod blessed me that I know.I thank God for the years I hadat that church so long ago.

The Words I Write For You

I cried today when I came to You,filled with emotions and overwhelmed too.I told You my fears, my worries and cares,as I came to You on my knees in prayer.
I want to give You all I can give,I want to please You by the way that I live.I long to do what You want me to do,everyday Lord I long to be true.
I don't want to hide my love for You.I want the whole world to know You are true.I want every child, woman and man,to know You're the reason that life began.
In my own home Lord help me to show,that You are the only way to go.Help me be loving and patient too,with my husband and kids all day through.
Make me a light so that all will see,that You are living inside of me.With words I say and words I write,help me to show Your power and might.
Lord I love songs and poetry too,I write about You and how You are true.I pray You can use a simple housewife,that maybe my words can touch someone's life.
I know that I struggle on many days,and sometimes I miss my hour of praise.I often fall short and don't honour You,by some of the things I say and do.
But give me the words I will write,about Your love all though the night.I feel so excited and honored too,that You chose me to write about You.
Then show me Lord what You want me to do,with each of the poems that I write for You.Right now they just sit in my bookshelf at home,oh heavenly Father, please use each poem.
Highway To Heaven
In this world problems face us each day,We hope and we pray that they just fade away.But the highway we're on never seems to go straight,And when things go wrong our hearts fill with hate.It's easy to gripe and complain about life,It's easy to dwell on the pain and the strife,But when things are hard we need to be strong,We need to trust God for His path's never wrong.We need to remember that life can be hard,Even Jesus suffered as His hands were scarred.He gave up His life for you and for me,He suffered and died so that we could be free.So when we are feeling like we can't cope,We should think of our Savior and be filled with hope.He gives us His strength when things go wrong,He's right here beside us making us strong. There will be times when our faith gets weak, It's on those times that His face we should seek.We should turn to our Father and thank Him again,For saving our souls and for easing our pain.Life can be hard, many trials we face,But someday I know I'll feel Jesus embrace.The highway I'm on is where I want to be,It's the highway to heaven, the right way for me.

God Called You Home

The other day God called you home to live with Him above. He said, “It’s time my precious child to feel my arms of love”. He opened up the pearly gates and ushered you inside. Then smiled at you and welcomed you with His arms open wide.
I can only imagine what Heaven's like
but I’m sure you stood in awe.
I can picture you in Jesus arms
just taking in it all.
I know you longed to be with Him
to see His gentle face.
To look into His loving eyes
and feel His sweet embrace.

I’m sure you fell upon your knees
and worshipped at his feet.
Then joined the choir singing songs
and melodies so sweet.
You lived your life down here on earth
by serving God above.
And now you’ll spend eternity
singing Him songs of love.

Oh how you loved Him all your days,
you gave Him your whole life.
Your love for Jesus shone so bright
even in times of strife.
You shared His love by how you lived
you gave him everything.
And I can hear Him say, “Well done”,
for living for the King.

Thank you for your faithfulness
for trusting in the Lord.
For all the times you prayed for me
you deserve His best reward.
I know each day you said a prayer
for family and each friend.
And I know that you were faithful
and prayed until the end.

I know you’re up in heaven now,
your face I cannot see.
But all those precious memories
will always stay with me.
I knew someday you’d leave this earth

Where The Flowers Never Fade

I love to walk in the garden
Inhaling the sweet scents that fill the air
Where the flowers bloom so lovely
As butterflies, dance with grace so fair

But with the years and seasons
The blooms come and go
It is then I look forward to springtime
For the flowers to bud and grow

There I sit in amazement
In what is held before my eyes
Sitting in the garden
My spirit soars and flies

When God finally calls me Home
When my soul is taken Heavens way
In the garden filled with love and peace
I will see the angels laugh and play

Where the sun shines so sweetly
Each and every day
It is there... I'll walk through the grandest garden
Where the flowers never fade

I heard quite often "men don't cry"
though no one ever told me why
So when I fell and skinned a knee,
no one came by to comfort me.
And when some bully-boy at school
would pull a prank so mean and cruel
I'd quickly learn to turn and quip,
"It doesn't hurt," and bite my lip.
So as I grew to reasoned years,
I learned to stifle my tears.
Though "Be a big boy" it began,
quite soon I learned to "Be a man."
And I could play that stoic role
while storm and tempest wracked my soul.
No pain or setback could there be
could wrest one single tear from me.
Then one long night I stood nearby
and helplessly watched my son die.
And quickly found, to my surprise,
that all that tearless talk was lies.
And still I cry, and have no shame,
I can not play that "big boy" game.
And openly, without remorse,
I let my sorrow take its course.
So those of you who can't abide
a man you've seen who's often cried,
reach out to him with all your heart
as one whose life's been torn apart.
For men do cry when they can see
their loss of immortality.
And tears will come in endless streams
when mindless fate destroys their dreams

All the hurt you left behind
That empty spaces could be filled
My arms, my heart, my mind
And though my body looks the same
As it did when you were here
The emptiness is growing
Even bigger with each year

I thought that time was healing
All the agonising pain
That as the tears were fading
Soon I wouldn't feel the same
And though I can be smiling
And you think that I'll survive
The pain is in my blood now
I have nowhere else to hide

I thought that time was healing
All the loss a mother feels
That now you live within my heart
I had you near me still
But I need so much to touch you
To see you smile again
And those memories I'm told are mine
Can never feel the same

I thought that time was healing
All the while the mask was worn
That underneath a new me
Was waiting to be born
But now I find I am the mask
It helps to keep me safe
And though my heart is breaking
You won't see it in my face

I thought that time was healing
All those tears my eyes have seen
That aching arms that miss you
Could be satisfied with dreams
But here I am, in pain again
And healing stands alone
And mother weeps, the world can see
For a son who can't come home

there's never the right time to say goodbye to someone you love very dearly. its hard to think of the fact the your gone forever. u will always be in my heart, soul, mind, and spirit. I never got a chance to say goodbye. u will never be forgotten. I luv u with all my heart big brotha n I cnt wait to see you again one day.
