Dennis Hodges Obituary

Dennis Hodges, 60, of Prince George, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 1, after an inspiring, heroic battle with lung cancer.

He was employed at Fort A.P. Hill and retired from the US Army in 1990. He attended Gregory Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a member of James River Black Powder Club for which he served as president for nine years. He was also former secretary of Virginia Muzzleloaders Rifle Association. He was a formidable hunter and enjoyed spending time outdoors. A favorite pastime was portraying 18th-century history at living history events or for the community. He enjoyed demonstrating the lifestyle of a colonial longhunter to school groups and Scouts.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Dale-Hodges of Prince George; father, James Hodges; and brother, Richard Hodges, of Woodstock, Ill.; daughter, Marjorie Ann Hodges of Hopewell; and two nephews.

Services will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at First Assembly of God, 25213 Ferndale Road, Petersburg, Va. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be sent to James River Black Powder Club, P.O. Box 411, Prince George, Va., or The American Cancer Society.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Dennis. We were classmates at Woodstock Community High School. It was always great to see Dennis at the class reunions. He led a very interesting and rewarding life that was all too short.

While living in Harvard, Illinois when Dennis was 10 or 11, My father, Claude Fox was pastor of the church that Dennis attended with his family. As a teenager I was always impressed with his father and mother and remember Dennis and his brother as bright, well-behaved boys.
I ran across this notice while checking out the newpaper that serves the McHenry County area. My condolences to the family.

Cheryl Dale and Family,

Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with you and all your family. Dennis was a good man who will be missed by all who knew him. His zest for life and passion for things he believed in were inspiring. During his struggle against cancer he taught me a great deal about human dignity. How he faced each day with his head held high and his direction straightforward. I will never forget. Dennis, it was both an honor and a privilege to have known you. In my mind I can see you at a Rendezvous with all the great Frontiersman from the past. Rest In Peace my friend.

I am sure your precious Dennis will always be in your hearts dear family, but remember God is here for you whenever you need Him, that have no doubt. Right now He has such loving concern for you and your family in your bereavements. Psalms 55:22 states: "Throw your burden upon God himself, And he himself will sustain you." May your family find peace and love in his loving care.

Cheryl and Family,
Words can only ease your grief in mourning the passing of good and humble man. Memories will always comfort you and help you heal from the separation from a loved one. Faith will bring you all together again in the certian resurrection for those who lived exceptional lives.

Dennis did not die, he just reported to his next duty station, as ordered, for his next mission assignment.

Dennis once told me that his Personna name was Eagle Heart. I know that Eagle Heart is soaring today free from the pain and torturous agony that he endured in his last days. I did not know him as long or as well as other members of the club, but never-the-less He was a very dear friend. We offer our condolences to you all.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, ""I welcome you.""

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......""My day was not in vain.""
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Those we love remain with us
For love itself lives on,
And cherished memories never fade
Because a loved one's gone.
Those we love can never be
More than a thought apart,
Far as long as there is memory,
They'll live on in the heart.

With our most sincere condolences,
