Ms. Hazel Mae Hicks, formerly of 716 Wesley St., Petersburg, Va., was called home to be with the Lord Monday morning, Oct. 20, 2008, at the Hopewell Health Care Center.
She was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Littleton, N.C., to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Annie Mae Hicks. Ms. Hicks was educated in the public schools of Petersburg, Va. She was employed for 20 years at Hotel Petersburg from which she also retired. Ms. Hicks was an avid reader especially of spiritual material. She also enjoyed special times in her kitchen preparing various sumptuous dishes.
Ms. Hicks received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and followed Him in believer's baptism on Oct. 2, 1988. From the moment of her profession of faith in Jesus Christ until her dying day, her life evidenced that she was truly a praise-filled, born-again child of God. She was a loyal and faithful member of Good News Baptist Church where she as affiliated with the Marie S. Coleman Memorial Ladies' Fellowship, the Sunday School Ministry and many other aspects of church activities. She was a devoted church mother, aunt, daughter, sister and friend.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Joe Billy Hill and Bernard Hill Sr.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories, a loving family to include: four nephews, devoted, Bernard Hill Jr. and his wife, Paulette, Joseph Hill, James E. Hill and Jerome Hill, all of Petersburg, Va.; two nieces, Mrs. Barbara Douglas (Edward) and Ms. Hazel Mae Hill; four great-nieces, Ms. Denise Douglas, Ms. Tashia Hill, Ms. Veronica Hill and Mrs. Kiesha Pope (James); three great-nephews, Mr. Edward Douglas Jr., Mr. Bernard Hill III and Mr. Darrin Hill (Melissa); a host of other great-great-great-nieces, nephews, other devoted friends and caregivers, including Kenin Graves, the staff of Hopewell Health Care Center and the hospice staff from Care Alternatives.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at Good News Baptist Church, 1920 Dupuy Road, Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. John Coleman, pastor, officiating. Interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at 1640 Johnson Road, Apartment 121A, Petersburg, Va.
