Carol Hawkins Obituary

Carol Parham Hawkins, 94, died Oct. 23, 2008, at The Petersburg Ladies Home in her hometown of Petersburg, Va.

She took pride in being the first girl born on Westover Avenue in Petersburg. Her parents were I. Val Parham of Petersburg and Lucille Loyd Parham, formerly of Lynchburg.

After her marriage in 1940, she lived with her family in Williamsburg, Va., Danville, Va., Coldwater, Mich., Darien, Conn., and Atlanta, Ga.

In retirement, she and her husband moved back to Petersburg 31 years ago. She was a wonderful mother and devoted friend, who managed to maintain friendships acquired in the many places in which she lived over the years. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, a talented floral arranger, and an active contributor to her book clubs. She loved a good story, and entertained many generations of family and friends with her extraordinary good humor and love of interacting with people.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Edgar Marvin Hawkins Jr., and her daughter, Carol Aston Hawkins. She is survived by two sisters, Lucille Parham Crane of Litchfield, Conn., and Katherine Parham Price of Jonesboro, Ark.; and her sons, Val Parham Hawkins and his wife, Florence Fox Hawkins of Alexandria, Va., and Edgar Marvin Hawkins III and his wife, Christine Hawkins of Darien, Conn. Five grandchildren also survive her, including Eleanor Hawkins Maguire and her husband, William Patterson Maguire of Washington, D.C.; Val Parham Hawkins Jr. and his wife, Sophie Brown Hawkins of Washington, D.C.; Chance Colbert Hawkins, of San Francisco, Calif.; Andrew Aston Hawkins of Austin, Texas; and Thomas Edgar Hawkins of Alexandria, Va. She also leaves four great-granddaughters.

What a lovely lady Carol was! I have so enjoyed her at the Ladies Home. My mother is a resident there also and she was in the room right next to Carol - even in her dementia she never failed to have a smile on her face and be happy to see me when I came in. I miss her very much. My husband sometimes carries his guitar over and plays in the room for my mom and some of those ladies close by and Carol always came and enjoyed his music. She was very special to me.
