Hubert Hinnant Obituary

Hubert S. Hinnant was called home on Oct. 31, 2008 to be with the Lord at the Hopewell Healthcare Center.

He was born on Sept. 22, 1922 to the late John Henry Hinnant and Ms. Minnie Bell Peacock. He was preceded in death by his sister, Courtney Dickerson.

Hubert received his formal education in North Carolina and later traveled to Petersburg, where he held positions at Camp Lee (now Fort Lee) and Hercules in Hopewell, and retired in 1984 after 37 years of employment. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church for 48 years where he served faithfully as an usher and trustee until his health declined. He received an honor of "Father of the Year" in 1994, gave of himself when called upon and will be remembered for his monetary gifts to church.

Hubert leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife of 56 years, Mrs. Ruth Robertson Hinnant; three sisters, Gertrude Crooms, of Goldsboro, N.C., Sarah Robertson of Ettrick and Nadine Baskerville of Petersburg; two brothers, Johnnie A. Hinnant of Washington, D.C. and Henry Peacock of Los Angeles, Calif.; three sisters-in-law, Elva Barksdale and Dorothy Whipple of Macon, Ga., and Virginia Robertson; four brothers-in-law; Malcolm Robertson of Ettrick, Joseph E. Baskerville Jr. of Petersburg, Robert Robertson of Chesterfield, and Robert Bracey of Norfolk; an aunt, Catherine Hinnant of North Carolina; his godchildren, Brandon M. Jones, Michelle and Latisha Harris; four generations of nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends, one Kim Winston; a devoted niece, Robin B. Powell; and a devoted caregiver.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday Nov. 7, 2008 at Shiloh Baptist Church, Chesterfield, with the Rev. A. L. Toney Sr. officiating. The interment will be held at the Church Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the staff of William N. Bland and Son Funeral Home, now serving from three locations, (804) 732-7841.

In loving memory of a wonderful person. I'm glad that the Lord blessed me and brought you into my life. From the time when you looked after me until my ma got off work to the present when I would visit you when my family and I came up to Virginia. We will love you and miss you always.
