Louise Holland Obituary

On Oct. 28, 2008, Louise Beckwith Holland passed away peacefully after a brief illness.

Louise, a long time resident of Charlottesville, was born on July 17, 1913, in Petersburg, Va., to Dr. and Mrs. Julian Ruffin Beckwith. She survived a sister, Mary, and three brothers, Julian, Thomas and John. After she graduated from Petersburg High School, she attended one year at the state teachers' college

in Harrisonburg, then she transferred to the University of Virginia School of

Nursing, graduating in 1936. While she was in nursing training, she met her future

husband, Dr. Charlton G. Holland Jr., who predeceased her in 2006 after 68 years of marriage. Louise was the last of her generation and was loved by her extended family. She was known for her sense of humor, her interest in books and the game of bridge, and her devotion to her husband and her children.

She is survived by her children, Charlton "Pete" Holland (Katherine Church), Cary Beckwith Holland and Christopher Black Holland (Gail Hutson); and by her grandchildren, Elizabeth Holland (Brian Dunham) and Cameron Holland (Ryan McKinley).

The family would like to state its gratitude to Louise's nieces, Polly Hawkes and Mary Coghill, for their loving assistance and attention to Louise over the last years of her life, and to the staff of Martha Jefferson Hospital (5th floor), of The Colonnades Nursing Care Center, and of Hospice of the Piedmont. No services are planned at present.
