Evelyn Roney Obituary

Evelyn Vivian Roney (Granny), age 79, was called home, Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at Henrico Doctor's Hospital, Richmond, Va. She was a resident of Dinwiddie County, Va., and resided at 5921 Church Road. She was born May 5, 1929, to the late Nellie McCray and Cornelius Young.

She was educated at the Dinwiddie Training Center, Class of '47. She attended one year at Virginia State University and was employed at Central State Hospital for 20 years as a nurse's aide. At an early age, Evelyn joined Olive Branch Baptist Church. Granny was a dedicated wife for 58 years. Granny enjoyed reading the Bible, along with having a passion for cooking and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Mrs. Mattie L. Parham, of Petersburg, Va., and nephew, Mr. John Carlton Parham, also of Petersburg, Va.

She leaves to cherish in her memories, husband, John Thomas Roney (Papa) of Dinwiddie County; her sons, Thomas DeLeon Roney (Elizabeth "Liz"), Pooler, Ga., Gerald Landis Roney Sr. (Joyce Ann Roney), Petersburg, Va., Rodney Earl Roney (Betty Mary Rodeman), Petersburg, Va., Stanley Kenneth "Kenny" Roney, Petersburg, Va.; her devoted daughters, Carolyn Odessa (Jones) Roney, Petersburg, Va., Cynthia Jacquilla Roney, Petersburg, Va., and Novella Marie (Ree) Roney, Petersburg, Va.; brothers-in-law, John Parham of Petersburg, Va., Floyd Roney (Nancy), Richmond, Va., Jessie Blackwell, Dinwiddie, Va., Henry Pegram, Petersburg, Va., Dorsey Mason of Petersburg, Va.; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Jones of DeWitt, Va., Marcella Faulcon of DeWitt, Va., Gloria Byrd of Petersburg, Va., Rose Roney of Jersey City, Va., Vernell Roney of Dinwiddie, Va., Gwenn Roney of Richmond, Va.; nieces, Gloria L. Parham of Petersburg, Eva Parham and Jeanette Parham of Richmond; grandchildren, Tony A. Roney (Cynthia), of Petersburg, Va., Gerald L. Roney Jr. (Lorine) of Petersburg, Va., Adrienne D. Roney, Newark, N.J., Felicia D. Roney and Brittany D. Roney of Pooler, Ga., and Rodhem A. Roney, Petersburg, Va.; great-grandchildren, Davante, Monique, Gerjuan, (Williams) of Petersburg, Va., and Trey Green of Petersburg, Va., Kristian Roney of Petersburg, Va., and Jada Young, of Newark, N.J. Granny also leaves a devoted and caring caretaker, Ethel Wheat of Petersburg, Va.

A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, with the Rev. Kevin Northam officiating. The interment will be held in Dinwiddie Memorial Park. There will be a wake from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Chapel of William N. Bland and Son Funeral Home, Petersburg. The family will assemble at the residence one hour prior to the service.
