Herbert Johnson Obituary

On Dec. 9, 2008, the sun set on Herbert Johnson, formerly of 500 Farmer St., (Gilhaven) Apt. 402, Petersburg, Va., at Golden Living Battlefield Park, Petersburg, Va.

He was born May 18, 1930, to Ella and Thomas Johnson in Dunn, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Williams Johnson, and his siblings, Woodrow (Buster) Johnson, Gloria Johnson, Lona Chamberlain and Romana Johnson.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and retired from Master System Bakery as a baker. He was a member of Club 17 for many years. He became a member of Power of Praise Bibleway Church, Hopewell, Va., until his health declined.

He is survived by two daughters, Linda Clarke (Pastor James Clarke Sr.) of Petersburg, Va., Brenda Taylor (Russell) of Upper Marlboro, Md.; one stepson, Stephen Williams of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Kim Jackson (Kevin) of Upper Marlboro, Md., James Clarke Jr. (Tracey) of Petersburg, Va., Cindy Martin (Reginald) of Upper Marlboro, Md., and devoted, Jamar Clarke of Petersburg, Va.; nine great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Arletha Dawkins of Petersburg, Va., and Theresa Johnson of Springfield, Va.; one brother, Ronald Johnson of Landover, Md.; five nieces, Jacqueline Stephens of Chester, Va., Romona Johnson of Petersburg, Va., Donna Coco (Alfredo) of Charlotte, N.C., Bridgette Dawkins of Petersburg, Va., and Leslie Dawkins of Alexandria, Va.; three nephews, Joseph Chamberlain Jr. of Petersburg, Va., David Chamberlain of Houston, and James Edward Johnson of Myrtle Beach, S.C. Special thanks of Rhonda Edmonds, Deacon Lonnie Chavis, Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Mary Nelson, Gilhaven and Golden Living Battlefield Park Convalescent Center.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Refuge Temple Church, Petersburg, with Elder Cornelius White, pastor, officiating. Elder James Clarke Sr. will deliver the eulogy. Interment will be in Mt. Minnis Memorial Cemetery, Chester. The remains will lie in state at the church on Saturday from 10:45 a.m. until the hour of service. Relatives and friends will assemble at the residence of Elder and Mrs. James Clarke Sr., 1223 Hawke St., Petersburg, at 11 a.m. The family may be contacted by calling his daughter, Linda Clarke, (804) 733-5349. A memory video may be viewed at the funeral home.

Brother Herbert is going to be deeply missed. We used to love visiting and talking with him at the home. We all loved him, but God loved him most.
