Leon Harris Obituary

Mr. Leon Anthony Harris of 3501 Huck Finn Court, Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2009.

He was the oldest and first son of Leon and Helen Harris. Leon found Christ at the early age of 12 years old at Calvary Baptist Church in Ayer, Mass. Upon graduation from Prince George High School, he entered into the U.S. Army where he served for four years with an Honorable Discharge. He later returned to the Prince George and Petersburg, Va., area working various jobs until he sustained a job related injury causing him to become ill with a rare disorder (Lympheda) that stopped him from doing physical things.

Leon enjoyed collecting GI Joe's, learning about past and present historical events and his favorite pastime was jokes. Leon's spirit was high and he fought quite a battle, but he wasn't alone. God surrounded him with love, mercy and grace. He blessed him with a wonderful family who truly loved him and many friends who cared including two new friends that took care of his medical needs at Retreat Hospital Lypheperdena Clinic, Lisa and Angela. His desire was to help the veterans advocate for fair and affordable housing and treatment.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother, Helen V. Harris of Petersburg, Va.; two brothers, Michael Harris and Jerome Harris, both of Petersburg, Va,; one very devoted sister, Shelly Harris of Petersburg, Va.; aunts, Christine Walker of Goose Creek, S.C. and Janice Hedgepeth of Halifax, N.C.; uncles, John Scott (Linda) of Korea, Richard Scott (Regina) of Richmond, Va., and James A. Harris (Rea) of Columbus, Ga.; godmother, Lena Allen of Richmond, Va.; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends, and devoted friend, Maria Hamilton.

A service of love and remembrance will be held at noon, Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at Emmanuel Worship Center, 236 Grove Avenue, Petersburg, Va. Pastor Joseph P. Green, officiating.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the staff of the J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, VA (804) 732-8911, www.jmwilkersonsince1874.com.
