Floyd Hayes Obituary

Floyd Roosevelt Hayes, lovingly known as Dick, was born Aug. 31, 1926, to Marie Tucker Hayes and the late Morris Hayes Jr. in Church Road, Va.

Dick graduated from Dinwiddie County Public Training School in 1944 and served in the United States Marine Corps in World War II.

Dick married Rozelia O. Gilliam on Aug. 6, 1947, in Petersburg, Va. Dick and Rozelia lived in Bradford, Pa., for 10 years and in 1956 relocated to Baltimore. Dick and Rozelia had four beautiful children, Doris, Phyllis, Stephanie and Kenneth.

Dick worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years, retiring as supervisor.

Dick maintained his membership with Mt. Poole Baptist Church of Ford, Va., from childhood. He was also a member of Light of the (Mason) West Lodge, the American Legion Post 213, NAACP and a supporter of the National Association of Police Organizations, as well as the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and Concerns of Police Survivors.

Dick enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially fishing with his nephews. He had an avid interest in word puzzles and fixing things. He also loved to travel with friends to gambling casinos up and down the eastern shores.

Dick loved life and didn't let anything stop him from enjoying all that it had to offer. He had his leg amputated and kept going; had abdominal surgery and kept going, and triple bypass heart surgery and still kept going. Dick had many reasons to slow down; instead he continued to visit Rozelia every day, drive to Virginia to visit his mother, and happily shuttle friends around town in Baltimore.

Dick leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Rozelia O. Hayes; his three daughters, Doris E. Coleman (Donald), Phyllis A. Hayes, both of Baltimore, Stephanie H. Douglas (Anthony) of Everett, Wash.; son, Kenneth F. Hayes (Roxanne) of Baltimore; his mother, Marie T. Hayes of Petersburg, Va.; a devoted sister, Bernice H. Johnson of Richmond, Va.; and a devoted brother, Beamon P. Hayes (Clarissa) of Petersburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Lisa Coleman, Shaunte Hooper, Rochelle Hayes and Ivy Douglas; four great-grandchildren, Latoya Burrell, Brittany Burrell, Jaden Hooper and Isaiah Hyde; as well as a great-great-grandson, Dayshawn Clark; in addition to a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends, especially his neighbors.

A homegoing service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at the Mount Poole Baptist Church, Ford, with the pastor, the Rev. Stephen Pugh, officiating, and the Rev. Arlester Newsome Jr. eulogizing. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will assemble at noon at the residence of his brother and sister-in-law, Beamon and Clarissa Hayes. Viewing will be held from noon to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at the Johnson Funeral Home, Petersburg.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Petersburg Chapel of Johnson Funeral Homes, 451 Halifax St., Petersburg.
