Samuel Hicks Obituary

Samuel Randolph Hicks Sr., 59, "Hardluck," of Disputanta, Va., formerly of Hopewell, Va., passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009.

Sam retired from the City of Hopewell Wastewater Treatment Facility in 1999 after 21 years of service as a master electrician. He raised Quarterhorses and loved his farm in Prince George County. He also loved to hunt and was a member of Courthouse Hunt Club and Cemetery Ridge Hunt Club in Sussex County. He looked forward to hunting season every year and spent many days listening to the dogs run and enjoying the company of his good friends. He also loved music and enjoyed going to concerts. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph Baskerville Hicks and Sue Wheelhouse Hicks, and John Daniel Moore and Lula Weaver Moore; parents, Joseph B Hicks Jr. and Maggie Moore Hicks; and his only brother, Joseph B. Hicks III.

He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Rebecca; and their children, Amy H. Parrish, Jennifer H. Jordaans (Darrell) and James B. "Jimmy" Hicks; and a son, Samuel R. Hicks Jr., and daughter, Vicki Hartless, from a previous marriage; nine grandchildren, Joshua B. Parrish II, Sean R. Hicks, Robin D. Hartless, Haley M. Hartless, Joseph B. Hicks, Samuel R. Hicks III, Daniel N. Ambrose, J. David Hicks and Christopher M. Shore; two uncles, Joseph R. Moore (Jean) and J. Gordon Moore; and one aunt, Christine Moore Burnley; and a host of cousins, friends and extended family.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 214 N. 6th Ave., Hopewell, Va., and where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, with the Rev. Phil Andrews officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Stroke Association or the American Lung Cancer Association.
