Anna Newby Obituary

Mrs. Anna Odessa Robinson Newby, "Bunzie," 96 of Claremont, Va., departed this life Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, in Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk.

She was born Jan. 10, 1913, to the late Samuel and Carrie Robinson. Anna Newby resided in the community all of her life. She was a homemaker, a dedicated wife for many years, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Anna was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Claremont. She was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Newby Sr.; six children, one stillborn, Ernest, Earl, William Jr., Curtis and Gertrude.

Anna leaves to cherish her memories: seven children, Harold Newby( Mildred) of New York, Lorena and Rosetta Newby of Claremont, Wesley Newby (Susan) of Waverly, Lovella Newby Williams (Carl) of Matoaca, Patricia Newby Lucas of North Carolina and Arnetta Newby Perrin (Arthur) of Norfolk; 19 grandchildren, one devoted grandchild, Deborah Moore of Claremont; 31 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Hallie Saunders of Virginia Beach; two sisters-in-law, Rosa Needam of Hampton and Vivian Newby of Nelsonia; a daughter-in-law, Geraldine Newby of Washington, D.C.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Special thanks to the staff of Waverly Health Care.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, from Abundant Life Christian Church, 784 Cabin Point Road, Spring Grove; Pastor Leon Pettaway officiating. The Rev. Anthony Washington, pastor of First Baptist Church, Claremont, will eulogize. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. All family and friends are asked to assemble 11:45 a.m. on the day of the service at the residence.

Funeral arrangements are being provided by Waverly Funeral Establishment, the Rev. Jeffrey L. Dodson Sr., funeral director; (804) 834-1001.
