Brenda Brown Obituary

After a two-year battle with ovarian cancer, Ms. Brenda C. Brown passed into eternal rest on Feb. 5, 2009.

She was the second of three children born to Sarah H. Bland Brown of Colonial Heights, Va., and Thomas Busby Brown of Ruther Glen, Va. She was predeceased by her sister, Julia Lee, and sister-in-law, Margaret Thomas Brown.

She is survived by two dedicated daughters, Glenna Brown of Colonial Heights, and Angela Brown of Chesterfield, Va. She also leaves to cherish her memory, one brother, Thomas B. Brown Jr. of Matoaca, Va.; one grandson, Ahman Page of Chesterfield; one dedicated niece, Carla Lee of Richmond, Va.; two loving sisters-in-law, Dorothy Smith of Littleton, N.C. and Camella Smith of New Haven, Ct.; brother-in-law, James (Walter) Lee of Colonial Heights; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

She was employed by Chesterfield County Schools for 20 years, where she worked at Matoaca Elementary before medical problems forced her to retire in 2007. She adored the faculty, staff and students at Matoaca Elementary, and she always felt like a part of the Matoaca-Ettrick community even though she did not live in that community. She worked tirelessly to assist the senior citizens in her community, and she spent many hours of her free time volunteering her services for the children and senior citizens in the community. She fought her illness until the very end and never complained about the chronic pain and weakness she experienced in her final days. Three days before her death, as she lay in her hospital bed, she continued to show genuine compassion and concern for those who needed her in her community. One of her final hopes was that all women would take an active role in their own healthcare.

A funeral service will be held at noon, Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009 at Bethesda Baptist Church, 15800 Woods Edge Road, Colonial Heights, with The Rev. Juanita A.W. Harrison, pastor, officiating and The Rev. Jeffrey A. Lee giving the eulogy. The interment will follow at the Mt. Minnis Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009 at the funeral establishment.

Honorary and active pallbearers are asked to assemble at 11:30 a.m. at the church.

The family will assemble at 11 a.m. at 15315 Happy Hill Road, Colonial Heights, the day of the services.

Family members and friends are invited to pay final tribute to Ms. Brown online at www.jmwilkersonsince1874.com where you may view a video tribute online or at the establishment.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the staff of the J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., 102 South Ave., Petersburg, Va., (804) 732-8911, www.jmwilkersonsince1874.com.

Dear Glenna and Family,
My heart and prayers go out to you upon hearing of your mother's passing. I worked with her at Matoaca Elementary and through Girl Scouts for many years. Her giving and caring spirit for others was reflected in her bright smile and she will be missed in the community. God's love to you all and know that you are not alone in this journey.
Blessings and Love,

May loving memories be with the Brown Family at this particuar time. Keep in mind the scripture found at Rom. 15:4 whereby in the scriptures we can find hope.

My heart is truly saddened at the passing of Ms. Brown. She worked with my class when I was in Pre-K at Matoaca Elementary School and was like a mom-away-from-mom to me at school. Even as I grew older, she never forgot me and I never forgot her. When I would see her, she always wore a smile and I will never forget her. My condolences and prayers to her family.

I would see Brenda each week when I would go to Matoaca Elementary {for almost 20 years}. She would always have a smile on her face and always so friendly. She always talked about her Mother and her daughters to me. She showed such a great love for them. May Brenda rest in peace --free of pain. My thought and prayers are with your family.
