Morris Bland Obituary

Morris F. Bland Jr., "Cubby," of 2017 Walton St., Petersburg, peacefully entered into eternal rest with the Lord on Thursday, July 31, 2009, at McGuire Veterans Hospital, Richmond, Va.

He was the son of the late Minnie Diggs and Morris Bland Sr. He was born April 9, 1948, in Dinwiddie, Va., and graduated from the Carver High School, Chester, Va. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Army, where he received the Bronze Star Medal. He retired from Bellwood Defense Logistics. He received numerous awards and recognitions for his years of service. He was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, Va.

Morris is survived by a devoted wife of 19 years, Mildred W. Bland of Petersburg, Va.; one loving and devoted daughter, Alexandria Hill of Winston-Salem, N.C.; six stepchildren, a devoted Kim Tucker-Ponton (Charles) of Chester, Va., Alicia Healy (Joseph), Karen Dorsey (David), all of Columbus, Ohio, Ronald Tucker of Houston, Alfred Tucker (Debbie) of Petersburg, Va., and Glenn Tucker (Ada) of Houston; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren that he dearly loved; stepfather, William Diggs of Petersburg, Va.; four brothers, Sidney Bland and Andre Diggs of Petersburg, Va., Mark Bland of Ettrick, Va., and Antonio Bland (Noel) of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Margaret "Bernice" Simmons of Petersburg, Va.; five aunts, a devoted Lemoyne Ward (Herman) and Louise Bland, all of Petersburg, Va., Doris Sydnor of Washington, D.C., Florence Whitmore of Philadelphia and Alfreda Wilson of Salem, N.J.; one unce, William Freeman of Petersburg, Va.; one great-uncle, Benjamin Bland of New Jersey; five sisters-in-law, Ellen Miller, Thelma Thompson (Earl) of Petersburg, Va., Delores Weaver and Joyce Weaver of Dinwiddie, Va., and Mary Weaver of Richmond, Va.; three brothers-in-law, Earl Weaver (Diane) of Dinwiddie, Va., Calvin Weaver (Sandra) of Chesterfield, Va., Robert Weaver (Minnie) of South Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends, among them several devoted friends, Tony Walls, Lumus Ward, Willie Davis, Military Retiree Club members.

Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, Aug. 7, at Good Shepherd Baptist Church, Petersburg. The Rev. Jeffrey Reaves is the pastor. The Rev. Dr. Earl Thompson, pastor of Morning Star Baptist Church, Capron, Va., officiating. Interment will be in the Bland Family Cemetery, Sutherland, Va. Relatives and friends will assemble at the residence, 2017 Walton St., at 11 a.m. A video tribute may be viewed at the funeral home.
