Virginia Steele, 80, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Kahl Home for the Aged, Davenport. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the mortuary. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport.

Virginia worked as a bank secretary and a commercial artist. She attended St. Ambrose College and was mentored by Father E. Cattich, who greatly encouraged her talent. She was a respected area artist and a member of the Iowa Watercolor Society. She received numerous awards for her artwork.
Virginia loved her family and was always a positive influence in their lives. She loved the outdoors, enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.
Those left to honor her memory include son and wife, Scott and Christine Steele, Belleville, Ill.; daughter and husband, Laura and Loren Peterson, Sugarland, Texas; daughter and husband, Martha and Troy Thein, Elkader, Iowa; son and wife, Mark and Barbara Steele, Blue Grass, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sisters, Dorothy Boland, of Arizona, and Phyllis Peterson, of California.
For the past seven years, Virginia was a resident of the Kahl Home. Her family greatly appreciated the care and love she received there. The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Kahl Home.

Scott, Laura, Martha (Muffy) and Mark:

I was saddened to hear of your Mom's passing. My sister Susan forwarded the notice to me.

Your Mom was quite a lady, with a warm heart, a statuesque carriage, and a wonderful eye and creative gift. I am proud to say that I have 2 of her watercolors hanging in my home - the gentleman sitting on a park bench is and has always been one of my favorites, and hung in Mom's house until she graciously gave it to me a few years ago.

I have such great memories of her, your Dad and you all from our childhood on Washington Lane. Between the Steele's and Lincoln's there was always something fun going on ... "Kick the Can", sledding down the street, sneaking into "the Barracks" (whatever that was - I can't remember, but I know it was exciting and fun!), the time your Dad brought the Tarantula home from Consolidated (yikes!), the warm smile your Mom always seemed to show - memories I carry with me always.

Please know that my thoughts are with you in your time of loss, and that her legacy lives on.

Warm regards,

John

When I see Ginny's smile in my heart's eye and I hear her love-filled laugh, I remember some of the joys of our neighborhood on Washington Lane. She was a delight and I could always count on her positive attitude to lift me, no matter what was happening. Even though I lost touch until August when Greg Hoover, my husband Craig, and I visited her, she never left my heart. I simply wouldn't know about love the way I do without having had Ginny in my childhood to show me the way. What a blessing. I wish I could have been with all of you for her service--Scott, Laurie, Muffie, and Mark--I send each of you my love and cry grateful tears with you. I sure do wish I could get a big hug from each of you. Hugging through cyberspace----Sue

Scott, Laura, Martha, Mark and families,

I am saddened by the passing of your mom, whom, you know, was my second mom when we were growing up. Despite today's sadness, I have nothing but treasured memories of this wonderful lady. Those include grilled cheese sandwichs with ketsup, olives, and a beautiful charcoal portrait she did of me which is displayed prominently in my townhouse.

I am so glad that Sue Lincoln and I got to visit your mom last August. It was a highlight of our 35th reunion of WHS' class of 1968.

I know you have wonderful recollections of your mom. Keep them and hold them dear.

All my thoughts, prayers, and love to you all.

Greg
