June Pelella Obituary

Newburgh, NY

June Abby Delores Pelella of Newburgh, NY, died Saturday, July 12, 2008 in her home at her husband's side. She was 81.

She was born June 20, 1927 in Yonkers, NY, the daughter of Doris Horton and Frank Smith; stepdaughter of Florence Lewis Smith.

She graduated from A.B. Davis High School in Mt. Vernon, NY, class of 1944. For 57 years, she was the loving wife of Louis F. Pelella, whom she married on December 1, 1951.

June was a lifelong member of the Girl Scouts of USA. She taught trainers for the Sarah Wells Girl Scout Council and was an original member of the Newburgh Girl Scouts, which was located in the historic Glebe House on Clinton Street in Newburgh. She was co-chairperson of the Sarah Wells Camp Wakoda in Palisades Park. She was a Catholic Daughter and a member of the Rosary Society at St. Patrick's Church, Newburgh.

June's love for family and friends was well known and unsurpassed. She was equally devoted to civic duty through her efforts to the veterans at the Castle Point campus of the Veteran's Administration health system. She was instrumental in sending out thousands of Castle Point application packets to service veterans, many of whom having no knowledge of the facility's services available to them. She will be greatly missed by her family as well as thousands that were affected by her volunteer work.

She is survived by her loving husband, Louis F. Pelella; daughter, Shawn Mhmoud; sons, Dana Pelella and his wife, Elizabeth of Warwick, NY, Lance Pelella and his wife, Linda of Danbury, CT, and Kerry Pelella of Newburgh; grandchildren: Sarah Hassan, Rasha Mhmoud, Lyla and Dina Mhmoud, Francesca and Giovanna Pelella, Frank and Michael Pelella, and great-grandchild, Amira Mhmoud.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, at Brooks Funeral Home, Inc., 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, at St. Mary's Church, Newburgh, NY. Burial will follow in Orange County Veterans Cemetery, Goshen, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations instead to be made to the Alzheimer's Assoc., Hudson Valley, NY Chapter, 2 Jefferson Plaza, Suite 103, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601-4060, or Girl Scouts of USA, Sarah Wells Council, 162 Bloomingburg Rd., Middletown, NY 10940.
