Barney Kovacs Obituary

Bethel, NY

Barney Kovacs, a longtime resident of Sullivan County, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2008, at the Catskill Regional Medical Center. He was 85.

Born in Hungary on August 21, 1922 he was a self-employed barber in New York City. He was predeceased by his wife, Magda Kovacs, on December 24, 2006.

In 1957, Barney and his wife, Magda immigrated to this country and resided in the Bronx for 25 years where they raised three daughters. In 1982, they relocated to a farm in Bethel. Shortly after moving to Bethel, their daughter, Helen Bakos, passed away leaving behind her two daughters, Angela and Laura. Barney and his late wife assumed the responsibility of raising their two granddaughters.

Barney will be sorely missed by his family and friends. He was an avid Yankees fan and a passionate animal lover.

He leaves behind his daughter, Barbara Parker of Bronxville, NY; three grandchildren: Anthony Parker, Laura Bakos and Angela Bakos, and a sister in Hungary.

He was predeceased by his two daughters, Helen Bakos and Magda Kovacs.

Visitation will be held at Ramsay's Funeral Home, 3534 State Route 55, Kauneonga Lake, on Tuesday, July 29, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.

Funeral services will be at noon at the funeral home with the Rev. Ivan Csete officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Rt 17B, Bethel, NY.

Barney or on his Hungarian name Barna was my uncle. I just recently found an early phot of him and my father Tibor Kovács, his younger brother. I want to share this photo now to make my American relatives remember to the Hungarian part of Barney's life. Mátészalka, Hungary 1938, Barney is on the left side.
