John Coakley Obituary

New Windsor, NY

John W. Coakley II, of New Windsor, climbed the stairway to heaven after a long, strong battle against cancer on Monday, September 8, 2008 at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, Newburgh. He was 58.

Son of Rose Ann Pantoliano and the late John W. Coakley, Sr., he was born June 12, 1950 in New York City. He married Sandra Boyea Coakley on May 18, 1980, who survives at home.

A family statement reads: "John reluctantly left behind his loving family and close circle of friends to explore the final frontier. Right up until he was too weak to, John continued to enjoy the things he loved most: spending lots of time with his family, enjoying his five awesome grandchildren, playing his guitar, bass fishing from his boat on the beautiful lake where he lived and celebrating life with his close circle of friends. Surviving cancer for so many years instilled in John pure joy at the simplest of life's pleasures. We will miss him dearly and long for his touch more than words can express."

In addition to his loving wife of 28 years, Sandra, he is survived by his sons, Ryan Coakley and Adam Coakley; daughter, Jennifer Meinsen and her husband, Joshua; her brother, Richard Baxter, and their mother, Patricia O'Hara Coakley; brother, Dennis Coakley; Sean O'Neill; grandchildren, Matty, Mark, Tori, Allie and Alex Meinsen; nieces and nephews, Dennis Coakley Jr., Ashley Coakley, Marissa Kyles, Lisa, Matthew and Nicholas Boyea, Trevor Denton and Jorja Hunt; great-niece, Gemma Coakley.

Memorial Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 11 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh, NY 12550.

A Memorial Service will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 12 in the funeral home.

At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations in John's name may be made to the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, 1 Sunrise Lane, Newburgh, NY 12550.

To Sandy and family,

I send you my heartfelt condolences, and prayers as you mourn John’s passing. I was deeply saddened to hear the news. John and I were friends in high school and graduated together from NFA. We played music together in my parents basement, talked about sports cars, he loved his Triumph, and enjoyed being teenagers. John was always happy, joking, smiling, friendly, and a genuinely good hearted person. I will miss him. God be with you.

John and I worked together for about a year and we kept in contact over the years from time to time. John would always bring a smile to my face, just being himself. He wasn't a close friend but he was a good friend. Just knowing him was a pleasure.

Sandy, Ryan, Adam and Jennifer:

We are so sorry to hear about Johns death. His passing is a sure sign that life is not always fair. It sounds like he grabbed on tight to what life would allow him. I can recall the early days when our boys were in Cub Scouts together. Sandy, you and John were a great team. Not long ago your son Ryan came into my office, now a grown business man, and throughout our conversation, we reminisced about those days gone by. Treasure your memories, they are the snapshots of joy and the strength that gets call upon as your pain heals.
