Josef Richter Obituary

Monticello, NY

Josef Richter, 68, of Monticello, NY, lost a valiant battle with myelodysplastic syndrome on Saturday, September 13, 2008.

The son of Sarah Brown and Hyman Richter, he was born in The Bronx on November 11, 1939 and grew up in Forest Hills, NY. A graduate of Hobart College and the Catholic University of Louvain Belgium Medical School, he trained at Beth Israel Medical Center in NY and in Buffalo, NY. After practicing in Oberlin, OH, he moved to Sullivan County and practiced Urology at Catskill Regional Medical Center from 1977 until his retirement in July 2007. He was a Board Member at Temple Sholom, an officer of the Medical Staff at Catskill Regional Medical Center, a member of Sullivan County Medical Society and a member of the Monticello Rotary. He was a former member of the Air Force Reserves at Rome Air Force Base, NY.

Survivors include his beloved wife Ida, and his children: Dr. Amy Richter and her husband, Dr. Norman Pflaster; and his son, Joshua Richter and his wife, Rachel Levin. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jonah Harrison and Hannah Colette Pflaster. He was looking forward to his son's expected child in October. He is also survived by his sister, Rochelle Ellen Richter of Florida.

The family is sitting Shiva at their home in Monticello until Friday.

Donations may be made to the AAMDS Society, Temple Sholom, or the Monticello Rotary.

Dear Ida,
I was very saddened to hear about Joe. We go back all the way to Ohio.
It was my good luck and fate to reestablish our friendship here in upstate NY. I will miss his late night phone calls about an "interesting'" patient.
